Rename Article to STEM fields
[edit]There has been talks to rename this article to something less ambiguous, while also delivering importance of this field to everyday lives and academia. Can someone please help me rename it to STEM fields. Thank you! Williamwang363 (talk) 00:21, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
- Where is this talk? Dan Bloch (talk) 00:46, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
- No real reason has been presented for the change. Ramos1990 (talk) 17:14, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
- Frankly, that sounds like more an empty sales pitch rather than a request backed up by evidence. Nerd271 (talk) 17:35, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
Proposal to rename article
[edit]I propose renaming this article to "STEM" (not "STEM fields" as indicated in the previous thread). STEM is the WP:COMMONNAME by any of the five WP:CRITERIA. Virtually all pages that link here do so as [[Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics|STEM]]

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics → STEM – Per WP:ACROTITLE, if a subject is known primarily by its abbreviation and that abbreviation is primarily associated with the subject
, the title should be an acronym. This is true in the case of STEM, with the expanded name generally only used on first mention in sources, sometimes not used at all, and almost never colloquially (consider e.g. Women in STEM) Mach61 19:08, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
- Support per nom. Mdewman6 (talk) 21:25, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose. Even in the page "Women in STEM," the acronym is defined, which is how it should be done. The title of the page is fine as it is. Nerd271 (talk) 21:30, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
- Leaning oppose: Acronym titles are for cases where the unabbreviated form is largely unknown or forgotten. That is not the case here. In this case, understanding the unabbreviated form is fundamental to any basic understanding of this topic. — BarrelProof (talk) 00:51, 25 April 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose. The acronym should be defined, and the title is sufficient as is. However, I suggest considering renaming the page to include (STEM) at the end of the name, so that users are clear that they've ended up on a page relating to "STEM" - the term often used in public, as opposed to the full definition. The best of both worlds, in other words. User:Husskeyy (talk) 05:17, 28 April 2025 (UTC)
- Wikipedia basically never does that (putting both an abbreviation and its meaning in a title), as that's considered redundant and thus failing WP:CONCISE. It's often done in the first sentence of the article content though, of course. — BarrelProof (talk) 16:09, 28 April 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose. One of those rare occasions where the full name of the subject has to be mentioned since the acronym's meaning is not inherently known by all. Steel1943 (talk) 21:42, 28 April 2025 (UTC)
