ACW unit article titling

[edit]

I'd like to hear your thoughts on the article title of 6th Kansas Militia Infantry Regiment. The unit is titled "Infantry" following Dyer's Compendium but was actually mounted for much of its existence. Of the sources in the article, Dyer has "6th Regiment Militia Infantry" and Conner p. 149 uses the current title of the article. Buresh has "6th Kansas Militia Cavalry", while the order of battle in Collins refers to the unit as "6th Kansas Militia Cavalry Regiment (mounted)". Sinisi calls it the "6th Kansas State Militia". The current title does not seem to be appropriate, but I'm not sure what alternative title is the best to propose. Hog Farm Talk 18:58, 1 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Hog Farm: I'm not really sure either, other than to say there were 1st through 22nd "Kansas Militia Infantry Regiment" listed at List of Kansas units in the American Civil War and a distinct 6th Kansas Cavalry Regiment. The militia unit looks like it was only in service for about a month? The article (your text) implies that not all of the men were mounted? I guess I'm not sure there is enough to deviate from the consistent titling of the other militia regiments. Or maybe "Infantry" should be removed from all of the Kansas militia units? But then we would need to consider how we deal with similar units in other states. Sorry I can't offer a more helpful perspective. Mdewman6 (talk) 21:10, 1 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it was only in operation for a month - the 6th Kansas Cavalry Regiment is something different; all of these militia units were called up to defend Kansas against Price's Missouri Expedition and were disbanded after Price was defeated. The 2nd Kansas Militia Infantry Regiment was cut to shreds at the Battle of Byram's Ford; this one and a few of the others have decent coverage of their operations but a bunch probably shouldn't have separate articles. I'll think about the titling question some more. Hog Farm Talk 21:30, 1 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
