Suggesting Article Improvements

[edit]

I've added my COI tag to the talk page and would like to suggest some improvements that will bring this article up to date and improve its accuracy. I have other suggestions, but I'm starting with changes to the introduction and history section.

My edit suggestions for the introduction are:

Commvault Systems, Inc. is an American publicly traded data protection and data management software company headquartered in Tinton Falls, New Jersey. Commvault enterprise software can be used for data backup and recovery, cloud and infrastructure management, retention and compliance.
+
Commvault Systems, Inc. is an American publicly traded (CVLT:NASDAQ) Cyber resilience and data protection software company. Commvault enterprise software and SaaS-based services can be used for data backup and recovery, data security, AI-powered threat prediction and response, cloud and infrastructure management, retention, and compliance. Commvault is headquartered in Tinton Falls, New Jersey and has 29 offices globally, including those in Beijing, Shanghai, Mumbai, Dubai, Israel, France, Germany and Brazil.

I would also like to request that the following paragraph be added to the end of the History section.

In October 2023, Alex Janas joined Commvault as Field CTO, bringing a focus on offensive security and experience as an analyst and operator with the NSA.[8] In July 2024, Pranay Ahlawat was appointed as the company's first Chief technology & AI officer.[9]

Thank you for your consideration and any feedback is welcome. SBCornelius (talk) 17:36, 20 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: Listing number of clients is considered promotional. Axad12 (talk) 17:12, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@ Axad12, thank you for the input. I have removed the number of customers stat from my request. I would also appreciate input on my other requested changes to the intro paragraph. The current language is somewhat dated and doesn't give an accurate summary. I've included several references here that show Commvault is currently understood as a cyber resilience company. I'll also change the COI tag back to n in case this isn't something you can prioritize at the moment. Thank you for your time.

Partly done I've added the offices. I will let someone else address the buzzword bingo. OXYLYPSE (talk) 14:22, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@OXYLYPSE Thank you! SBCornelius (talk) 20:33, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not done for now: buzzwords sound WP:PROMO Encoded  Talk 💬 09:37, 26 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Encoded, and thanks for reviewing my suggestions. I have a few other edits to suggest, but I'd like to clarify this point before I move on. Are you saying that "cyber resilience" it a buzzword and that should be used to describe the company? Thanks again for your time and any feedback is appreciated. SBCornelius (talk) 19:54, 1 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I have no problem with cyber resilience specifically, the section I have issue with is "Commvault enterprise software and SaaS-based services can be used for data backup and recovery, data security, AI-powered threat prediction and response" sounding promotional - particularly the AI powered bit being in the lead. Encoded  Talk 💬 20:48, 1 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Encoded, I've made some edits to my proposed lead. Please let me know if you think this will work.
Commvault Systems, Inc. is an American publicly traded (CVLT:NASDAQ)[10] Cyber resilience[11] and data protection software company.  Commvault enterprise software and SaaS-based services are used for data backup, recovery and security[12][13], as well as cloud and infrastructure management, retention, and compliance.
Thanks! SBCornelius (talk) 17:15, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Encoded, I hope all is well. I wanted to resurface this to see what you think of my proposed changes to the intro paragraph. Thanks for your time, and any feedback is welcomed. SBCornelius (talk) 20:35, 13 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
 Not Done. Still promotional. Axad12 (talk) 08:09, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'm proposing an updated edit to the intro paragraph for this article and I would appreciate any feedback. I've also looked to articles for other SaaS companies for what the community finds acceptable, and most articles include a list of how the software is used in the intro to give readers a quick idea of the breadth of use. For examples please see Shopify, Snowflake_Inc., ServiceNow, and HubSpot.

My suggestion for new lead is:

Commvault Systems, Inc. is an American publicly traded (CVLT:NASDAQ)[14] Cyber resilience[15] and data protection software company. Commvault enterprise software and SaaS-based services are used for data backup, recovery, and security[16][17], as well as cloud and infrastructure management, retention, and compliance.

Commvault is headquartered in Tinton Falls, New Jersey[18] and has 29 offices globally, including those in Beijing, Shanghai, Mumbai, Dubai, Israel, France, Germany and Brazil.[19][20].

Thank you to those reviewing this request.SBCornelius (talk) 21:54, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @SBCornelius, thanks for the new suggestion. I've added a slighly adapted version of it to the article. My concern is no longer promotion but the overuse of product listing (e.g. listing everything it does with data). I believe that may violate WP:NOTPRICE. Therefore, I've kept the general premise of the lead but simplified it slightly. For example, by changing "data backup, recovery, and security" to "data security" since both the other topics are a part of data security. You can see the version I've added in the article. Hope this is satisfactory. Thanks, Encoded  Talk 💬 15:17, 6 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Encoded, that makes sense. Thanks taking the time to look at this. I'm about to propose the inclusion of a few new sections to better explain what Commvault does. I'd love it if you could give some feedback there, but I understand if you have other priorities. Thanks again for the help. SBCornelius (talk) 20:50, 7 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @SBCornelius, I'm happy to have a look - currently working through the 140+ request backlog at the moment so it may take a few days for me to get to you though, sorry! Encoded  Talk 💬 21:44, 8 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Encoded No rush and thanks for your time. I know the backlog has been a beast for months now. SBCornelius (talk) 19:57, 11 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Products - clean up list

[edit]

It looks like the products list is outdated. Commvault seems to produce one thing, the Commvault Cloud. Previous items from the list like Metallic is now part of the Commvault cloud, as explained here: https://metallic.io/. Any concerns if I move all the items to a "Previous Products" section and put "Commvault Cloud" under Products? Fairwin99 (talk) 21:50, 13 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi@Fairwin99! I'm a connected contributor with an edit request pending (see the above section on this Talk page). I have only requested changes to the intro paragraph, but I have suggested edits to other sections drafted and planned on posting them once the edits to the intro were settled.
I have a new subsection that deals with the issue you've found regarding Metalic and Commvault Cloud. I thought I would drop it here to see if you found it helpful. This would be under the Software section and be titled Software as a Service.
On October 14, 2019, Commvault launched Metallic, a SaaS backup and recovery service for the mid-market, allowing customers to backup on-premises data to their own backup system, their public cloud, Metallic's public cloud, or a combination of both.[1] In November 2023, Commvault announced the launch of Commvault Cloud,[2][3] a platform powered by Metallic that unifies the company's data protection and resilience capabilities.[4] The system integrates a number of security and AI partners, including Avira, CyberArk, Darktrace, Databricks, Entrust, Microsoft Sentinal, Netskope, Palo Alto Networks, and Trellix.[5] In August 2024, the company announced an expansion of its security partnerships to include, Google Cloud, Splunk, Dasera, Wiz and Acante.[6] Commvault Cloud utilizes a generative AI copilot to provide users with real-time insights, code assistance, and setup assistance.[7] In May 2024, the company launched Commvault Cleanroom Recovery, an on-demand service that allows organizations to create an isolated and secure environment for restoring backed-up data during a cyber attack.[8]
Thanks and let me know your thoughts. SBCornelius (talk) 18:36, 19 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not Done. The text above is obviously promotional in intent. Axad12 (talk) 12:58, 22 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
cc @SBCornelius - I suggest removing the excessive words and stick to facts. Something like:
Commvault provides a data protection and resilience software platform called Commvault Cloud, first introduced in November 2023 [link to source]. Commvault Cloud is used by mid-market companies for backing up data and restoring it on various locations.
Under the products section list the product types not product names. Fairwin99 (talk) 03:15, 9 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Proposing a section on Software and Services

[edit]

I would like to propose adding the following sections to define Commvault for readers better. This should go after the History section and before the Acquisitions section, but I'm open to feedback. Thanks for your time and please let me know if you have any questions.

Software
Commvault software is an enterprise-level data protection platform that contains modules to back up, restore, archive, replicate, and search data and supports backup and recovery for SaaS, Hyperscaler, and other workloads.[1][2] It is built from the ground-up on a single platform and unified code base. Commvault Cloud is organized into three packages that include operational recovery, cyber recovery, and autonomous recovery.[3] The software is available across cloud and on-premises environments.[4]
Data is protected by installing agent software on the physical or virtual hosts, which use operating system or application native APIs to protect data in a consistent state. Production data is processed by the agent software on client computers and backed up through a data manager, the MediaAgent, to disk, tape, or cloud storage. All data management activity in the environment is tracked by a centralized server, the CommServ, and can be managed by administrators through a central user interface. End users can access protected data using web browsers and mobile devices.
In 2008, Commvault launched a new remote operations management service for storage management for small and midsize businesses.[5] In 2009, the company's backup software product Simpana version 8 offered the industry's first global embedded software deduplication, allowing users to deduplicate data no matter where it is stored.[6] In 2015, following the release of Simpana version 10, the product was renamed Commvault Software.[7] In 2017, Commvault began to sell its Hyperscale Backup data protection appliances, following up a year later by adding high capacity Hyperscale appliances, and the standalone Remote Office Appliance.[8][9] Also in 2017, Commvault and Cisco Systems announced ScaleProtect, combining HyperScale software reference architecture with the Cisco Unified Computing System, giving enterprise customers the ability to manage secondary data in a cloud-like, on-premises solution.[10][8] On July 17, 2018, the company announced a newly packaged set of four products under the name Commvault Complete: Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery, Commvault HyperScale, Commvault Orchestrate, and Commvault Activate.[11][12]
Software as a Service
On October 14, 2019, Commvault launched Metallic, a SaaS backup and recovery service for the mid-market, allowing customers to backup on-premises data to their own backup system, their public cloud, Metallic's public cloud, or a combination of both.[13] In November 2023, Commvault announced the launch of Commvault Cloud,[14][15] a platform powered by Metallic that unifies the company's data protection and resilience capabilities.[16] The system integrates a number of security and AI partners, including Avira, CyberArk, Darktrace, Databricks, Entrust, Microsoft Sentinal, Netskope, Palo Alto Networks, and Trellix.[17] In August 2024, the company announced an expansion of its security partnerships to include, Google Cloud, Splunk, Dasera, Wiz and Acante.[18] Commvault Cloud utilizes a generative AI copilot to provide users with real-time insights, code assistance, and setup assistance.[19]
In May 2024, the company launched Commvault Cleanroom Recovery, an on-demand service that allows organizations to create an isolated and secure environment for restoring backed-up data during a cyber attack.[20]
Partnerships
Commvault has partnered with companies including Cisco Systems,[10] Hewlett Packard Enterprise,[21] Microsoft,[22] Amazon Web Services,[23] IBM,[24] Google,[25] and VAST Data.[26]
In 2017, Commvault partnered with Cisco UCS on ScaleProtect to create the first Cisco offering to include the HyperScale software reference architecture.[27] The company later partnered with HP to provide a SaaS backup solution powered by Green Lake.[28]
In June 2018, IBM made Commvault services available to customers using IBM Business Resiliency Services.[29]
In June 2023, Commvault and VAST Data partnered to co-engineer a system that allows the Commvault platform to integrate VAST's all-flash read performance.[30]
Services
Commvault provides consulting services for customers. The company advises customers with setting up new data management systems from the architecture design to the implementation and monitoring. In the remote managed service, Commvault manages the software in production for their customers.[31]
