"Magic" (Chinese: 看我72變; pinyin: Kàn wǒ qī shí èr biàn) is a song by Taiwanese singer Jolin Tsai, featured on her fifth studio album Magic (2003). The track was written by Issac Chen, Edward Chan, and Charles Lee, and produced by Bing Wang. It was also used as the theme song for the online game Asgard. The single was released on February 19, 2003, by Sony.[1]
Background
[edit]On September 16, 2002, Tsai revealed that she had already completed recording five songs and would soon begin further work on her upcoming album.[2] On December 7, 2002, media outlets reported that the album was scheduled for release in January 2003.[3] On February 12, 2003, Sony held a listening session for the new material, inviting music professionals including Jamie Hsueh, Paula Ma, and John Yuan to discuss the promotional order of the tracks.[4] The following day, reports confirmed that the album was scheduled for release on March 7, 2003.[5]
Composition
[edit]The song opens with a mysterious yet playful prelude, using computer technology to simulate the sound of the traditional sanxian. Blending elements of disco and hip-hop, it features a strong sense of rhythmic bounce and danceability.[6]
Music video
[edit]The music video was directed by Kuang Sheng with a production budget of NT$2 million. It emphasized the detail and realism of computer-generated effects, digitally replacing background dancers with characters from Asgard to perform alongside Tsai.[7] The choreography, created by Rambo Lan, featured intricate hand movements designed to create a magical, illusion-like effect. Throughout the video, Tsai appears in four different outfits: a printed jumpsuit, a western cowboy-inspired look, a casual equestrian ensemble, and a punk-style outfit.[6]
Commercial performance
[edit]On December 26, 2003, "Magic" ranked number one on UFO Radio Top 100 Hits of the Year. On January 12, 2004, it was listed at number 24 on Hit FM Top 100 Singles of 2003.[8]
Critical reception
[edit]Tencent News commented that as the album's title track and lead single, "Magic" marked the beginning of Tsai's signature dance-pop style, which significantly influenced the C-pop music scene.[9]
Live performances
[edit]On March 8, 2003, Tsai performed "Magic" on TTV's variety show Variety Flagship.[10] On August 2, 2003, she sang the song at the 14th Golden Melody Awards.[11] On August 13, she performed it on Hunan TV's program Music Continued.[12] On October 10, 2003, she appeared at the Believe in Taiwan Party and performed the track.[13] On November 2, 2003, Tsai sang it at the China Anji Huangpu River Source Ecological Culture Festival.[14] On November 15, 2003, she performed at the 2003 Asia Super Stars Anti Piracy Concert.[15] On November 30, 2003, she performed the song at the Star Storm Concert.[16]
