World Table Tennis Day

[edit]

World Table Tennis Day (WTTD) is an annual observance held on 23 April to promote participation in table tennis and its role in social inclusion. Established in 2015 by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), and organised by the ITTF Foundation, WTTD highlights the sport’s accessibility and community impact through thousands of local events worldwide.[1][2]

History

[edit]

World Table Tennis Day was first marked on 6 April 2015, aligning with the United Nations’ International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. In 2023, the celebration date was moved to 23 April to honor Ivor Montagu, founder and first president of the ITTF and organiser of the inaugural World Table Tennis Championships in 1926.[1][2]

Observance and Themes

[edit]

WTTD emphasises participation and enjoyment over competition, with annual/biannual themes linked to social issues:

Activities include community play sessions, inclusive tournaments, school and workplace activations, public pop-ups, online streams, and panel discussions. [1][2][10]

Participation

[edit]

Participation has grown since inception, with hundreds of events registered each year across more than 100 countries. In 2024, over 800 events were organized in 121 countries and territories; in 2025, more than 840 events were recorded across 146 countries and territories, with several first-time participants.[1][11]

Main Celebration Events

[edit]

Organisation and Initiatives

[edit]

WTTD is coordinated by the ITTF Foundation under its TT4All program. Since 2021, the WTTD Promoters initiative has supported selected local organisers with microgrants, training and communications to deliver socially impactful events aligned with the theme. In 2024–2025, the Foundation released a two-phase Diversity and Inclusion Handbook and ran the #TTBelongsToYou campaign to broaden participation. A global table-mapping collaboration with Pongmasters encourages identifying and mapping local tables, including wheelchair accessibility and lighting conditions, to improve inclusion.[1][10][11]

Reception and Impact

[edit]

International and national bodies, media, and NGOs have covered WTTD’s thematic focus and participation growth, highlighting links to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and inclusion agendas. Sector coverage has noted sustainability efforts and nationwide activations by member associations.[7][12][13][14][15][16]
