Whole EP is the first official recording by Indie Rock band Pedro the Lion. It was released on Tooth & Nail Records in 1997.[1] Lead singer David Bazan described this album's songs as having a more simplistic structure then much of his later work.
When Pedro the Lion reunited after a very long hiatus from about 2004 until 2018 they returned to playing the songs from the Whole EP. As you can tell in this performance from their reunion show at Seattle's Tractor Tavern. [2][3][4] While there may not have been a whole lot of publicity in the early days the documentary on David Bazan, Strange Negotiations,[5] documents their early years quite well with the videotapes that fans sent in. Further info on how the band grew over the years can be found on their biography page[6] and this extensive reunion interview on KEXP.[7]
Critical Reception
[edit]Trouser Press sums up Whole as an EP epitomized by simple ringing guitars and themes of religion, drugs and betrayal.[8] KEXP noted that Whole contains some of his most directly religious songs like the pensive ballad “Lullaby” in which he calls out “You know I want to be like Jesus, but it seems so very far away.”[9]
