Vishal Mourya is an Indian film director, screenwriter, and producer known for his work in socially driven cinema. He gained national recognition for co-directing and co-writing the Odia-language film DAMaN, which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Odia at the 70th National Film Awards.[1]
Early Life
[edit]Mourya was born in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. He studied engineering at Samrat Ashok Technological Institute, Vidisha. Before entering the film industry, he worked in the corporate sector as an engineer in Pune.
Career
[edit]Mourya began his career working on television projects including Mahayatra (Star Plus, 2010), Dance Premier League (Sony TV, 2010), Miss Universe (Sony TV), and Miss India (Zoom TV).
In 2022, Mourya co-directed and co-wrote DAMaN, a film inspired by the efforts of a government doctor in rural Odisha combating malaria. The film received critical acclaim and commercial success in Odisha.[2][3][4] It won the National Film Award for Best Odia Film at the 70th National Film Awards[5] and the Best Odia Film at the 34th Odisha State Film Awards.[6]
Following DAMaN, Mourya produced the Odia-language film Murabi (scheduled for 2025), a family drama centered on intergenerational conflict between two Odia households. He is also directing Landfall, a film inspired by the Odisha Super Cyclone of 1999 and the state’s disaster preparedness efforts.[7]
Mourya’s upcoming Hindi-language project, B for Bundelkhand, focuses on farmer suicides in the Bundelkhand region of central India.[8]
Vision and Themes
[edit]Mourya has expressed interest in telling stories rooted in Indian heartlands with broader social relevance. In interviews, he has stated his belief in the phrase "Local is Global," emphasizing that stories from small towns can have international resonance.[9]
