Umuoka Ubirielem Autonomous Community is an officially recognized autonomous community in Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria. It was granted autonomous status by the Government of Imo State and is listed as entry number 130 in the *Imo State Official Gazette*.[1]
Geography
[edit]Umuoka Ubirielem is located in southeastern Nigeria within Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State. It lies in the rainforest belt with fertile land that supports agriculture.[2]
Postal and geographic records sometimes list the area under variant names such as **Uhuala-Umuoka** or **Elugwu-Umuoka**, both within Assa (Asaa) Ubirielem, Orsu LGA. These entries share the postal code 473116.[3]
History and Administration
[edit]Umuoka Ubirielem was formerly part of the larger Assa (Asaa) Ubirielem group. It gained recognition as a standalone autonomous community after approval by the Imo State Government, published in the Imo State Gazette.[1]
Traditional leadership follows Igbo customs, headed by an *Eze* (traditional ruler) supported by a council of elders and chiefs.[4]
Culture and Festivals
[edit]The people of Umuoka Ubirielem are predominantly Igbo, speaking the Igbo language and practicing Christianity alongside traditional beliefs.[5]
Cultural celebrations include:
- Iri Ji (New Yam Festival) – marking the harvest season
- Youth Carnival Day – an annual celebration highlighting youth activities
- Community Cultural Events – entertainment and social gatherings supported by local groups
Economy and Infrastructure
[edit]Agriculture is the backbone of the community’s economy, with yam, cassava, oil palm, and vegetables as major crops.[6]
The community also hosts:
- Primary and secondary schools providing basic education
- Health centres offering primary healthcare services
- Markets supporting local trade and commerce
- The Umuoka Ubirielem Civic Centre, inaugurated in December 2016, used for community gatherings and events[7]
In 2024, reports noted intervention efforts to address gully erosion affecting the community.[8]
