Umuoka Ubirielem Autonomous Community is an autonomous community in Orsu Local Government Area, Imo State, Nigeria. It was officially recognized by the Imo State Government, and is listed as entry number 130 in the Imo State Official Gazette.[1]

Geography

Umuoka Ubirielem is located in southeastern Nigeria, within Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State. Postal records place it under the code 473116, confirming its administrative location.[2] The settlement lies in the rainforest belt of Nigeria, with fertile land that supports agriculture.[3]

History and Administration

Originally one of the villages within the larger Assa (Asaa) Ubirielem group, Umuoka Ubirielem gained recognition as a standalone autonomous community after approval by the Imo State Government. The recognition was formally published in the Imo State Gazette (p. 3, entry no. 130).[4]

Leadership follows Igbo traditional structures, headed by an Eze (traditional ruler) supported by a council of elders and chiefs.

Culture and Festivals

The people of Umuoka Ubirielem are predominantly Igbo, speaking the Igbo language and practicing Christianity alongside some traditional beliefs.[5]

Cultural life includes festivals and celebrations such as:

  • Iri Ji (New Yam Festival) – marking the harvest season.
  • Youth Carnival Day – a vibrant annual celebration highlighting youth activities.
  • Breweries Event (August) – a yearly sponsored entertainment and cultural program held in the community.
