Tom Pitfield is a Canadian political advisor and data strategist. He has served as Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister of Canada since September 17, 2025.[1]

Career

Pitfield is the co-founder and current Chairman of Canada 2020, a progressive think tank established in 2006.[2][3]

He also founded Data Sciences Inc. (or Data Sciences Ltd.), a digital analytics and campaigning firm incorporated in 2014.[4] He served as its CEO and oversaw contracts supporting “Liberalist,” the Liberal Party’s voter-outreach tool.[1]

Pitfield was described as Chief Digital Strategist for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s successful 2015 federal election campaign.[5]

Pitfield was initially appointed interim Principal Secretary under Prime Minister Mark Carney in July 2025, before assuming the permanent role in mid-September.[1]

Personal life

Pitfield is married to Anna Gainey, Member of Parliament and former President of the Liberal Party of Canada.[1]
