The Order of the Written Word is an AI-free writing challenge and community event founded in 2024 by Holly Rhiannon.[1] It takes place annually in November and accepts a variety of writing formats, including novels, poetry, short fiction, and manuscript revisions.[2]
The challenge was created as an alternative to National Novel Writing Month after that event began allowing the use of generative artificial intelligence in submissions.[3] It provides structured prompts and themed events designed to encourage consistent creative work.[4]
In addition to its November challenge, The Order runs shorter seasonal events referred to as “Conclaves” in March and July, which focus on intensive writing sprints over a shorter period.[5] Participation is open to writers worldwide, with online groups used to facilitate discussion and accountability.
