Overview

[edit]

Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) is an Indian electronics and semiconductor manufacturing company, established in 2020. The company specializes in electronics manufacturing and semiconductor services. It operates facilities across India, including three in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, and has announced plans for facilities in Gujarat and Assam. [1][2]

History and Corporate Developments

[edit]

TEPL was founded in 2020 as a greenfield venture by the Tata Group. In 2023, it acquired Wistron Infocomm Manufacturing (India) Private Limited for $125 million, gaining control over Wistron's iPhone assembly operations in Karnataka. Subsequently, in January 2025, TEPL acquired a 60% controlling stake in Pegatron Technology India Private Limited, which operates an iPhone manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu, further expanding its footprint in Apple's supply chain.[3][4]

By mid-2025, TEPL's facilities accounted for approximately 37% of India's iPhone exports, with a significant portion directed to the United States, reflecting Apple's strategy to diversify its manufacturing base beyond China. [5][6]

Semiconductor Initiatives

[edit]

In 2024, the Government of India approved the establishment of semiconductor facilities in Gujarat and Assam, with Tata Electronics participating in both projects.[7] Through 2024 and 2025, Tata Electronics announced plans to invest ₹1 lakh crore (approximately USD $12 billion) to establish these facilities.[8][9]

The Dholera facility in Gujarat is planned as a semiconductor fabrication plant, in collaboration with Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (PSMC), focusing on analog and logic integrated circuits. The Assam facility is intended for assembly, testing, marking, and packaging of semiconductor components. These initiatives are part of Government of India’s initiative to reduce reliance on imported semiconductor components.[10][11]

In 2025, Tata Electronics also signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with Bosch, Merck Group, and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), the R&D subsidiary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, to support the development of these facilities.[12][13][14]

Localization

[edit]

Tata claims to have developed high-precision machinery for producing complex iPhone casings in-house, transitioning towards reducing reliance on imported equipment from China. These innovations were implemented at its Hosur facility, with plans to eventually export the technology.[15] With Foxconn calling hundreds of engineers from its India operations back to China, allegedly as part of Chinese governments aim to curb technology transfer to India[16], Tata Electronics has been training its engineers at Powerchip in Taiwan.[17]

Challenges and Industry Dynamics

[edit]

While Tata Electronics has made strides in India's electronics and semiconductor manufacturing sectors, it faces challenges related to production efficiency and geopolitical tensions. Reports indicate that production efficiency at TEPL's facilities has been lower compared to established manufacturing hubs in China, highlighting the complexities involved in building end-to-end chipmaking capabilities. [18] Additionally, geopolitical tensions between China, India, and the United States have impacted the global supply chain, influencing TEPL's operations and strategic decisions. [19] [20]
