Su-en Wong (born 1973) is New York based Singaporean contemporary artist who primarily features herself in artistic works using colored pencils that depict the stereotypes of femininity.
Life
[edit]Su-en Wong (黃素恩) was born in Singapore in 1973. Gifted in music from an early age, she obtained her Licentiate from the Trinity College of London in 1989, then her B.A. (1993) from the Royal School of Music, London, then her M.A.(1994) from the University if Wisconsin-Madison and finally her M.F.A. in Painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1997..[1]
Wong was a visiting artist to the Maryland Institute College of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Orange County Museum of Art, and Harvard University. In addition, Wong received the Painters & Sculptors Grant from the Joan Mitchell Foundation in 2000 [2], and became a fellow of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Maine (1997).
Having studied under Singaporean artist Liu Kang (artist), Wong had her first solo exhibition in Singapore at 14, and her work have been exhibited at various museums and exhibitions around the world, such as the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Houston (2005), the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Brooklyn (2004), the Denver Art Museum, Denver (2003), the Art Gallery of Ontario, Canada (2000), the Gwangju Biennale, Korea (2000), Zolla/ Lieberman Gallery, Chicago (2000), and the Tobey Gallery, Memphis College of Art, TN (1998). Her work can be found in public and private collections, including the collection of Melva Bucksbaum, the Whitney Museum of American Art[3], the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art[4], and the Portland Art Museum [5]
