Royan Institute
[edit]Royan Institute (Persian: پژوهشگاه رویان; “Royan” means “embryo” in Persian) is an Iranian public non-profit research and educational institute affiliated with the Academic Center for Education, Culture and Research. Established in 1991 by Saeid Kazemi Ashtiani, it focuses on biomedical research, translational medicine, stem-cell research, infertility treatment, and clinical studies.[1]
The institute publishes two international, peer-reviewed journals: the quarterly Cell Journal (impact factor 3.128 in 2022)[2] and the International Journal of Fertility and Sterility (IJFS)[3]. In addition, Royan has contributed to over 600 scientific publications, 14 books in Persian and English, and holds 26 patents registered in Iran.
Research Institutes
[edit]Royan Institute is organized into three specialized research institutes located in Tehran and Isfahan, each focusing on a distinct area of biomedical science. These institutes conduct both fundamental and applied research, aiming to advance knowledge in reproductive medicine, stem cell biology, and developmental biotechnology, while also supporting clinical applications and technology transfer.
- Reproductive Biomedicine Institute (Tehran): Focuses on infertility treatment, reproductive genetics, endocrinology, and embryology.
- Embryonic Stem Cells and Biology Institute (Tehran): Specializes in stem cell research, regenerative medicine, and cellular biology.
- Developmental Biotechnology Institute (Isfahan): Concentrates on developmental biology, biotechnology applications, and translational research.
Knowledge-Based Companies
[edit]Royan Institute supports several knowledge-based companies that translate its research findings into practical medical applications and innovative therapies. These companies focus on areas such as regenerative medicine, dermatology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, and biotechnology. By bridging laboratory research and clinical application, they aim to provide advanced treatments and contribute to the commercialization of scientific discoveries.
- Royan Tan Cell Company: Specializes in skin and dermatological diseases.
- Royan Bina Cell Company: Focuses on ophthalmology and eye diseases.
- Royan Bone Cell Company: Concentrates on bone and cartilage-related disorders.
- Gene Asa Company: Produces recombinant proteins and antibodies.
- Cell Tech Pharmed: A subsidiary of Barekat Pharmaceutical Group, involved in stem cell-based therapies.
- Royan Trade Development Company: Facilitates commercialization and distribution of scientific products.
Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMP) Center
[edit]Established in 2018, the Royan ATMP-TDC aims to bridge laboratory research and clinical application in regenerative medicine. The center focuses on developing advanced cell-based medical products for orthopedic, skin, neurological, and metabolic conditions, and serves as a reference laboratory for quality control of cell-based products.[4]
