Draft:PlayOJO

PlayOJO is an online casino platform that was established in 2017 and is based in London. The platform operates in various jurisdictions, including the United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark, Canada, Spain, and several South American countries under the brand name PlayUZU.

Sponsorships and Media Presence

[edit]

In 2021, PlayOJO became the official sponsor of the television show The Masked Singer, a partnership that faced criticism for its ties to online gambling.[1] In 2024, it sponsored Season 17 of Dancing on Ice.[2]

In 2018, PlayOJO placed a punch bag featuring UK Transport Minister Chris Grayling’s face at King’s Cross Station to highlight travel disruption.[3] Additionally, in 2020, the brand commissioned research on public perceptions of the name "Karen” which found that 69% of UK adults aged 40 to 54 would not name their child Karen due to the associated connotations.[4] It also launched a marketing campaign featuring a fictional perfume advert titled "Compulsion," starring TV personality Gemma Collins, aimed at raising awareness about problem gambling.[5]

Regulatory history

[edit]

PlayOJO was included under SkillOnNet's remote casino operating license in 2017, with its bingo product launching under a separate remote bingo operating license in February 2020. The platform obtained additional gaming licenses for Ontario, Buenos Aires City, and Peru in 2022 and 2023.[6]

In 2019, the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) found that PlayOJO, along with four other online gambling companies, breached the UK advertising code by directing gambling advertisements to individuals under the age of 18.[7] In 2022, the ASA upheld complaints regarding televised advertisements for PlayOJO's "Hot or Cold" feature, which were considered misleading.[8]
