Piergiuseppe Morone (born 10 May 1976) is an Italian economist and professor of economic policy[1] at UnitelmaSapienza University of Rome.His research focuses on green innovation, sustainability transitions, and the circular bioeconomy. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of Societal Impacts [2]and Vice-Chair of the Scientific Committee of the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU)[3].

Education and early career

Morone earned a PhD from the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) at the University of Sussex in 2003, studying under economist Nick von Tunzelmann. He holds a Master of Arts degree in Development Economics from the University of Sussex

He began his academic career as a researcher at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" and subsequently held positions at the University of Naples "L'Orientale" and the University of Foggia.

Academic positions

In 2015, Morone was appointed Full Professor of Economic Policy at UnitelmaSapienza University of Rome, where he serves as Vice-Rector for Research[4]. He directs the School of Sustainability Studies and Circular Economy (SUSTAIN)[5] and coordinates the Bioeconomy in Transition Research Group (BiT-RG)[6].

He holds additional academic affiliations as an Associate Fellow at the Behavioural Environmental Economics Team at University College London[7](UCL) and as a Research Fellow at the Corvinus Institute for Advanced Studies at Corvinus University in Budapest.

Research and publications

Morone has authored over 140 peer-reviewed articles in the fields of innovation economics and environmental sustainability[8][9].

His research has been cited over 4,000 times with an H-index of 39[10].[12] He has led EU-funded research projects including STAR-ProBio[11] and SUSTRACK[12]

Policy and advisory roles

From 2019 to 2021, Morone served as an economic advisor to Italian Minister of the Environment Sergio Costa[13].

He has served on advisory boards for projects including BIOBRIDGES[14] and ROBIN [15] and contributed to SAPEA's evidence report "A Sustainable Food System for the EU" for the European Commission[16].

Editorial work

In addition to his role at Societal Impacts, Morone serves as Associate Editor of Cleaner and Circular Bioeconomy [17] and sits on editorial boards of journals including Current Opinion in Green and Sustainable Chemistry[18] and Open Agriculture[19]. He has served as Guest Editor for special issues in the Journal of Cleaner Production[20].

Recognition

Morone is listed in the Stanford/Elsevier World Top 2% Scientist Rankings[21].

The European Commission selected the STAR-ProBio project he coordinated as a "success story."[22]

He received the Premio Rassegna Economica for best paper on North–South Italy economic integration in 2012[23].
