Peaks and Valleys is a 2019 American independent drama film directed by Michael Burns. Set in the Alaskan wilderness, the film explores themes of survival, trauma, and human connection. It stars Kevin T. Bennett and Kitty Mahoney.
The film premiered at the Julien Dubuque International Film Festival, where it sold out all scheduled screenings, and later achieved substantial viewership through digital distribution.
Plot
[edit]Jack, a reclusive man living alone in a remote Alaskan cabin, encounters an unconscious woman, Bailey, who mysteriously appears wrapped in plastic in his nearby lake. After rescuing her, Jack discovers she is suffering from withdrawal and emotional trauma. Forced to survive together during the harsh winter, the two form a fragile bond while confronting their pasts and personal demons.

[edit]Peaks and Valleys was directed and edited by Michael Burns and produced through Burnhouse Pictures. Filming took place in remote areas of Alaska, capturing the rugged environment integral to the film's tone. The production emphasized naturalistic performances and minimalist settings.
Release
[edit]The film premiered at the 2019 Julien Dubuque International Film Festival, where it became the first film in the festival's history to sell out all scheduled screenings.[1] Following its festival run, it was distributed digitally, achieving millions of views on Tubi and over 2.5 million views on YouTube by 2025.[2]
Reception
[edit]Peaks and Valleys received positive reviews for its emotional depth and atmosphere. Loud and Clear Reviews described the film as "an intriguing character study sandwiched between a shocking beginning and frustrating end, that somehow manages to work."[3] One Mann's Movies praised it as "a wilderness thriller that punches well above its weight."[4]
