Omid Ali Nahvi (Persian: امید علی نحوی; 10 September 1949 – 6 June 2008) was an Iranian musician, composer, and music educator. Despite losing his eyesight during childhood, Nahvi became one of Iran’s prominent blind musicians, known for his multi-instrumental skills and contributions to music education. He is credited with founding the first music school in the city of Isfahan.[1]
Early life and education
[edit]Nahvi was born in 1949 in the village of Khomegin near Hamadan, Iran. He lost his eyesight at the age of five due to complications from measles.[2] His family later moved to Tehran, where he enrolled in the Roudaki Music School for the Blind. There, he studied under well-known Iranian musicians such as Javad Maroufi, Hossein Ali Vaziri Tabar, and Houshang Zarif.[1]
Career
[edit]Nahvi began his musical career working with Abadan Radio and the Iranian Oil Company. In 1966, he relocated to Isfahan and became active in local music and education. He was appointed head of choir and solfège instruction for the Iranian Scout Organization and also taught music in public schools. Additionally, he worked with local theater productions in Isfahan.[1]
Roudaki Music Academy
[edit]In 1965 (۱۳۴۳ SH), Nahvi established the Roudaki Music Academy in Isfahan, recognized as the city’s first music school. The academy played a significant role in training numerous young musicians during the 1960s and beyond.[3]
Role after the Iranian Revolution
[edit]Following the 1979 Iranian Revolution, Nahvi contributed to revolutionary and patriotic music. He collaborated with organizations such as the Basij and the IRIB in Isfahan, composing and performing music for revolutionary events and children’s programming.[4]
Death and legacy
[edit]Omid Ali Nahvi died on 6 June 2008 in Isfahan, reportedly due to a heart attack. His music academy continued operations following his death, and his legacy lives on through the work of his students. He is remembered for his dedication to accessible music education and his role in shaping post-revolutionary music culture in Iran.
