Nursulu Shaimerdenova (Нурсулу Жамалбековна Шаймерденова, Нұрсұлу Жамалбекқызы Шәймерденова) is a Doctor of Philology and Professor of Russian Philology and World Literature at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, director of the Research Institute of Turkology and Altai Studies at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.[1], a professor emeritus of Kokshetau State University and visiting professor at the Kazakh Branch of Moscow State University in Astana [2]. She is, additionally, a well-known public figure in Kazakhstan as member of the Committee for Scientific Expertise of the Assembly of People of Kazakhstan, and has written and published several children’s stories. [3]

Shaimerdenova serves on the programming committee of the Kazakhstani Association of Russian Language and Literature Professors (KAZPRYAL) (Russian: Казахстанская ассоциация преподавателей русского языка и литературы), a member organisation of the International Association of Russian Language and Literature Professors (MAPRYAL) (Russian: Международная ассоциация преподавателей русского языка и литературы) [4]. She has been an active member of discussions over the role of Kazakh and Russian bilingualism in Kazakhstan (Languages of Kazakhstan)[5] and spoken out about the need for national harmony at meetings of the Assembly of People of Kazakhstan [6]. She was awarded the Medal of Pushkin by Russian ambassador to Kazakhstan Mikhail Bocharnikov in 2008 in recognition of her efforts to improve Russian-language education abroad. [7]

Biography

Nursulu Shaimerdenova was born on 16 April 1958 in Novotroitskoe Village, Jambyl Region, now known as Tole Bi, Shu District.

Family

Parents:

  • Her mother, Alipa Shaimerdenova (1928 - 2000) was a history and Kazakh language teacher and Chairwoman of the Society 'Znaniye' in Shymkent.

Children — Shaimerdenova has three children, Ajar (1987 - 2008), Aliya (born 1989), and Ayajan (born 1999).
