Mohammed Abd Hassan (Arabic: محمد عبد حسن; born March 21, 1964, Basra, Iraq) is an Iraqi novelist, short-story writer, and civil engineer.[1] He is best known for his short story collection Al-Tufan wa Qisas Ukhra (The Flood and Other Stories, 2002) and the novel Khara’it al-Shatat (Diaspora Maps, 2014).[2][3] His works have been noted for their focus on exile, social change, and the cultural life of Basra.

Biography

Born in Basra, he earned a BSc in civil engineering from the University of Basra in 1987.[1] His literary interests began in the 1980s within the Basra Writers Group (جماعة البصرة أواخر القرن العشرين), which aimed to revitalize local short-story writing styles.[1]

Literary Career

His debut collection, Al-Tufan wa Qisas Ukhra (The Flood and Other Stories, 2002), reflects Basra’s cultural and historical fabric, with critics noting its emotional depth and historical resonance.[2]

His later novel Diaspora Maps (خرائط الشتات, 2014) earned critical attention for its portrayal of exile and Iraqi societal fractures.[3]

He also authored a series of short-story collections and novels, such as To Wait for Nothing, The Game of Patience, Seven Voices, and There Is No End to What Happened.[4]
