Miraheze is a not-for-profit open-source wiki hosting service, founded in July 2015 and run by a group of volunteers, the wesbite hosts over 5,000 wikis as of 2022[update].[1] The platform was created as an ad-free alternative for creating websites using the software MediaWiki.[2]
History
[edit]Miraheze was founded in July 2015 by John Lewis and Ferran Tufan.[3] In November 2019, Miraheze became a registered not-for-profit organization in the United Kingdom as Miraheze Limited.[4]
In May 2019, the Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence based in Estonia created the Cyber Law Toolkit using Miraheze with the aim of providing a repository of information accessible to professionals and students regarding online security.[5][6]
Miraheze has previously been used by several Scottish non-governmental organizations, including Scotland's International Development Alliance, which previously held an Edit-a-thon on the platform in 2020.[7] In the same year, students from The Arts Foundation, in collaboration with Chisenhale Studios, created a public repository of information using Miraheze that catalogued the work of various British artists as part of the alternative art program “Into the Wild”.[8]
Later in 2021, more British organizations would begin using the platform as a database, including Tees Valley Arts, an arts charity based in Redcar.[9] The platform has also been used by the Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology to implement the “Tutorials in Bibliotheken” initiative supported by the German National Library of Science and Technology.[10][11]
Services and features
[edit]The platform has tools for facilitating the customization of encyclopedia content, as well as a variety of tools for translating and formatting articles.[12] Additionally, the platform maintains an inactivity policy where websites that have not been maintained or edited for a period of 60 days are considered for deletion.[13]
Content
[edit]Since 2021, Miraheze has become home to wikis closed by Fandom, deemed to violate their community creation policy. This included wikis for the Monster Girl Encyclopedia.[14] In 2024, the collaborative project “Sexypedia”, a repository dedicated to cataloging information about the online phenomenon Tumblr Sexyman, moved to Miraheze after sudden changes in Fandom's policies.[15]
The platform has hosted content related to sexuality and gender, including the Non-Binary Wiki, which documents information about gender identity and language use.[16] They have also become home to various long-standing LGBTQ+ wikis forcefully merged into one and purged of many articles by Fandom, such as the LGBTA Wiki and EZGender Wiki.[1]
Role in education
[edit]The platform had previously been used by several US universities, such as Wright State University, to help instructors review student contributions in real time,[17] Miraheze is also listed by the Semantic Web library at UCLA.[3] European universities have also used the platform to share information, including the University of Hildesheim[18] and is used by wikis such as Rosetta Code.[19]
A student-led wiki for Northeastern University students called Huskypedia was started in 2022 on Miraheze, in face of dissatisfaction with existing online resources of student information provided by the university.[20]
In addition, the platform has also been used for teaching in Latin America, specifically to give courses on article writing and wikitext editing for students at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO) as an alternative to the courses provided by Portuguese Wikipedia.[21]

The day Fandom denied their appeal, Lee officially requested space from Miraheze, a nonprofit hosting service, as a new home. The community lent their full support to the decision, and for the next two weeks the Discord was a hive of activity.

However, in order to control the access of the selected texts for review, while also avoiding disruption of regular work on Wikipedia, I chose to conduct the experiment on another website, identical to Wikipedia in code, navigation, and layout, but not subject to the same content rules, called Miraheze.
