Professor Ming Hung Wong (Chinese: 黃銘洪) is a Hong Kong–based environmental scientist, academic, and journal editor. He is currently Advisor (Environmental Science) at the Education University of Hong Kong.[1] and served as Editor‑in‑Chief of the journal Environmental Geochemistry and Health (Springer Nature) from 2002 to 2023.[2]
Wong’s research focuses on ecotoxicology, phytoremediation, and environmental pollution, with an emphasis on persistent toxic substances in Asia.[3] He has published over 800 SCI-indexed papers [3], edited multiple scientific volumes, and holds several patents.[1] According to Stanford University’s global citation rankings (2020–2021), he was ranked No. 6 globally and the top Chinese researcher in environmental sciences by career-long citation impact.[4]
He has contributed to international environmental initiatives led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and has held academic and advisory positions in Hong Kong, mainland China, Russia, and Europe.[1]
Academic Roles and Memberships
[edit]Wong serves as Advisor (Environmental Science) at the Education University of Hong Kong,[1] and has held several prominent academic roles. He was elected a Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2025[5] and became a Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts in 2022.[6] From 2002 to 2023, he served as Editor‑in‑Chief of the journal Environmental Geochemistry and Health (Springer Nature).[2] He has been a Changjiang Chair Professor under China's Ministry of Education since 2015[1] and an Emeritus Professor at Hong Kong Baptist University since 2013.[7]
Major Awards / Honours
[edit]Wong has received two Doctor of Science (DSc) degrees: one from Durham University in 1992 and another from the University of Strathclyde in 2004, both awarded based on his published research.[1] In 2024, he was conferred an honorary DSc by Southern Federal University in Russia in recognition of his contribution to a major government-supported scientific project.[8] In 2016, he received the Milton Gordon Award for Excellence in Phytoremediation from the International Phytotechnology Society.[9] Wong has also been listed in Stanford University’s global citation rankings, placing sixth globally and first among Chinese researchers in environmental sciences for career-long citation impact (2020–2021), and eighth in 2023–2024.[4]

- Silver Medal (Food Waste for Fish Culture) for International Inventions (Geneva) (2019). The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Conservation promoted the invention to local feed manufacturers, fish farmers, and restaurant owners by holding meetings and training courses.[16]

- Silver Medals (Portable Aeroponic Culture Unit) from the Silicon Valley International Invention Festival (SVIIF, USA) and the International Invention Competition (iCAN, Canada) in 2024. The iCAN award is independently confirmed,[20] while the SVIIF recognition is reported by the Education University of Hong Kong.[21] The prototype has been transformed into a piece of laboratory equipment for use in schools and universities in Shanghai, China.
