Lars Melander is a Swedish fine artist, graphic designer, art director and educator.[1][2] His career spans more than six decades, with work presented in exhibitions in Europe and North America, particularly in Sweden and the United States. Melander has also worked as a teacher, illustrator, and set designer, contributing to both the fine arts and applied design fields.
Early life and education
[edit]Melander was born in Stockholm in 1939.[3]
He studied at Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, graduating in 1962 with a focus on graphic design and illustration[4] In 1965, he attended an evening course at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.[5]
During his studies, he was awarded several scholarships, including from the Sandrew Foundation (1960) and Reeves and Sons (1962).[6]
Career
[edit]Following graduation, Melander received a scholarship from Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, United States, where he began his professional career.[7][8][9]
He later moved to New York City and joined Lippincott & Margulies, where his projects included work for American Airlines, Hudson Paper, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.[10][11][12][13]
In the 1990s and early 2000s, he was awarded several working scholarships from the Swedish Visual Arts Fund, the Swedish Illustrators Association, and a travel scholarship from the Society of Swedish Composers (FST), which supported international travel.
Melander illustrated books including Vi ses på Baren by art historian Gösta Arvidsson, about the Opera Bar in Stockholm.[14][15]
He produced commercial work for the Swedish postal service, including postage stamp illustrations, and created set designs for television productions.
In 1990, he appeared in the Swedish television series Modemaffian, which examined fashion, cultural trends, and their impact.
Melander has served as a jury member for exhibitions such as the Mini Print International of Cadaqués in Spain, Grafikbiennalen in Varna, Bulgaria and Deutsches Plakat Museum in Essen, Germany Bonniers Konsthall in Sweden, and events associated with Sotheby’s.[16]
In 2004, art historian Gösta Arvidsson published Den rastlösa penseln (The Restless Brush), a biography of Melander, with a foreword by Beate Sydhoff, then Permanent Secretary of the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts.[17]
Carlssons published three books featuring his illustrations: Vi ses på baren!, Vi ses på Stopet, and Vi ses på Freden!. [18]
His artwork is held in the collections of the Nationalmuseum, Moderna Museet, the National Library of Sweden, Landskrona Museum, and the Swedish Arts Council, as well as in municipal, corporate, and private collections in Sweden and the United States.[19] He is currently preparing a book project based on selections from his seventy sketchbooks preserved in the National Library of Sweden.[20]
Personal life
[edit]Alongside his career in art and design, Melander has been active as a jazz drummer since the 1970s. He has performed with numerous musicians and frequently appeared at Fasching, a well-known jazz venue in Stockholm.[21]
He currently lives and works in Bromma, Stockholm, where he maintains his studio.
