A Katakhanas (Greek: καταχανάσ, plural καταχανάδες), also spelled catacano, katakhana, or katakan, are a mythical type of malevolent undead creature, featured in Cretan folklore. It is a type of vrykolakas.[1] Like other types of vrykolakes, it is said to be created when a sinful person dies[2]. It rises from its grave at night to harm the living, including by eating their livers[2] and by drowning married women.[3] The only way to destroy a katakhanas is to boil its severed head in vinegar within 40 days of its burial[4] or to burn its corpse completely to ash, until not even its nails remain unburned.[2]
In Popular Media
[edit]- Katakans are a race vampire featured in the Witcher franchise described as bat-like monsters who can turn invisible and who rapaciously hunt humans.
- The magazine Dragon #25 (May 1979) includes catacano in an article which describes them as a form of a vampire and give stats for them to use for Dungeons & Dragons. They are described as always grinning and attack by spitting blood that burns those it touches.
