Kalamkaar, meaning writer or creator in Hindustani, is an independent Indian record label founded in 2018 by rapper Raftaar[2] [3] and his business partner Ankit Khanna[4][5]. The label is rooted in the Desi Hip Hop scene and currently represents artists such as Raftaar, KR$NA, Deep Kalsi.[6] [7]
The lance has been widely active in the Indian hip hop scene, believing in nurturing artists with limited resources and giving them a platform to shine in the industry[8].
History
[edit]In 2017, Ankit Khanna launched a new business vertical spanning films, music, content, brand solutions, and live events, which he named AK Projects.
By 2018, both Raftaar and Ankit Khanna began broadening their vision within the Indian music landscape, which led to the foundation of Kalamkaar Records Pvt. Ltd. [9] [10]
The record label entered the music scene with a focus on desi hip hop, aiming to give the genre a stronger platform. The label’s first wave of signings included artists such as KR$NA[11], Yunan[12], Deep Kalsi, Rashmeet Kaur[13], Emiway Bantai, Muhfaad, and Harjas.
Later in the same year, Raftaar and Ankit Khanna made the strategic decision to merge AK Projects with Kalamkaar, thereby consolidating their ventures into a single unified entity.[14]
Rise of Kalamkaar
[edit]Early Fame: Where the Movement Began.
[edit]Before the merger, AK Projects laid the groundwork for something bigger by launching a live event series called Mic Check[15].
The label tasted its first real breakthrough when Karma’s track “1 Se 23” shot up the YouTube trending charts, becoming a landmark success both for the artist and for the label[16].
Controversy as a Catalyst
[edit]Things took a dramatic turn towards the end of 2019 and early 2020. The spotlight shifted to KR$NA, who was not only signed to Kalamkaar but also served as the A&R for the label.[17] He sparked controversy by engaging in a one-sided beef with his former label mate Emiway Bantai.[18]
KR$NA dropped a trilogy of hard-hitting tracks, beginning with “Freeverse Feast (Langar)”, a fiery response to Emiway’s “Freeverse Feast (Dawat)”.[19] Produced by Raftaar himself, the track stirred tension between the two camps. KR$NA kept pushing the narrative with “Seedha Makeover” (a rebuttal to Emiway’s “Seedha Takeover”) and “Dum Hai.” [20]
But the clashes didn’t stop there. KR$NA also went toe-to-toe with Muhfaad, another former label mate. What followed was a volley of diss tracks that not only solidified KR$NA’s reputation as one of the sharpest diss rappers in the game, but also gave Kalamkaar an even bigger boost in reach and recognition. [21]
Aftermath of the Mayhem
[edit]When the dust finally settled, Kalamkaar shifted its focus back to growth. They welcomed Mrunal Shankar[22] and Brishav[23] into the fold, producing new music under the Kalamkaar Music banner.
By now, Kalamkaar was dominating the Indian hip hop scene. Collaborations with rising stars like Fotty Seven,[24] J Trix, and Bali further cemented its stronghold.
Kalamkaar’s Gateway in the Indian Hip Hop Scene
[edit]Mic Check Season 1
[edit]In 2018, before Kalamkaar was officially launched by its two founders, AK Projects introduced a series of events titled Mic Check Season 1[25]. This initiative brought together several artists signed under AK Projects, along with others managed by Khanna, as well as some well-known names from India’s underground hip-hop circuit.
The lineup for the event featured a diverse group of artists, including KR$NA[26], Karma[27], Harjas[28], Yunan[29], Kidshot[30], Rashmeet Kaur[31], Deep Kalsi[32], and Akriti Kakar[33].
Takeoff Thursday Season 1
[edit]In 2022, Kalamkaar introduced a groundbreaking initiative called Takeoff Thursday—an event designed to spotlight emerging talent from India’s underground hip hop scene.[34] The label opened up its established platform to these rising voices, giving them an opportunity to showcase their skills to a wider audience. Notably, artists like Panther [35] [36][37] and Khullar G[38], both of whom gained recognition through MTV Hustle 2.0,[39] also performed at the show.
Takeoff Thursday Season 2
[edit]Following the phenomenal success of the first season, the franchise took a one-year hiatus before officially announcing the highly anticipated Kalamkaar Takeoff Thursdays Season 2.[40]
The new line-up featured artist like Augus,[41] Raula,[42] Ynxiety,[43] Legend,[44] Gud Kid,[45] Khan Sahab,[46] ProAkshat[47] and Amar.[48]
Partnerships and Collaborations
[edit]The record label has successfully managed to build strong connections with several artists across the Indian hip-hop scene, along with forming associations with other entities as well.
Artist Collaborations
[edit]The very first collaboration for the hip-hop label took place with the well-known Delhi-based artist Fotty Seven, for the launch of his EP titled Asli Independent.[49] This project included contributions from artists signed under the label itself, namely KR$NA, Raftaar, and Karma. In addition to them, the EP also featured Rebel 7, who appeared on one of the tracks.
In 2021, the hip-hop label entered into a one-year non-film collaboration with rapper Ikka[50], one of the most prominent and highly respected artists in the community, who had also begun his career alongside the label’s co-founder, Raftaar. As part of this deal, Kalamkaar took on the role of distribution partner and was also responsible for releasing Ikka’s second studio album, Nishu. This project featured an impressive lineup of artists, including Raftaar, Badshah, Raga, Seedhe Maut, Karter, Rawal, Aghor, Bharg, and the international group Dope D.O.D. The album performed well across streaming platforms, receiving positive reception, and its overall statistics reflected encouraging results. [51]
During the same period, the independent record label also joined forces with artist Bali for the release of his EP titled Mubarak Ho Bali Hua Hai.[52] That very year, the label further extended its support to underground talent by backing J Trix for the launch of his debut EP titled Bohot Sahi[53], while also collaborating with GhAtak for the release of his project Since 1999.[54]
Later on, in 2023, the label continued its streak of collaborations by producing as well as distributing rapper Yogie’s EP titled The Mean Emcee, further strengthening its presence in the independent hip-hop landscape.
Corporate Partnership
[edit]The label initiated its very first significant corporate partnership with Sony Music, one of India’s top and most influential music labels in the year of 2020. While the collaboration was primarily centered around a deal involving rapper Raftaar, it also extended to and benefited several other artists associated with Kalamkaar. Through this partnership, projects and songs were produced with Kalamkaar talents such as Yunan, Deep Kalsi, Rashmeet Kaur, Harjas, and KR$NA, further strengthening the presence and reach of the label’s roster.[55]
The turning point for the label came when Raftaar collaborated with Believe (artist and distributions services), a leading French distribution company. This landmark partnership significantly elevated Kalamkaar’s reputation within the Indian music industry, establishing it as one of the most prominent and influential independent labels in the desi hip-hop space.[56]
Another major collaboration was formed when Kalamkaar entered into an agreement with Novex Communications. Under this deal, Novex was entrusted with managing the on-ground public performance rights for Kalamkaar’s entire music catalog. The agreement, which took effect on March 20, 2023, granted Novex the authority to handle live performance rights and other related usage rights for Kalamkaar’s sound recordings, including those originating from both films and albums, throughout India as well as for World Ship and Cruise rights. This contract is set to remain valid until March 19, 2026. Novex Communications is a highly recognized and established name in the industry, known for handling similar responsibilities for leading entities such as Yash Raj Films, Tips Industries, and Zee Music Company, among others.[57]
In addition, the hip-hop label also signed a notable partnership with the Indian subsidiary of Mass Appeal Records. The collaboration initially began with the release of a special track by Raftaar and KR$NA, which was launched on Raftaar’s birthday. Building on this relationship, both companies strengthened their partnership in 2025, when Mass Appeal Records took on the role of co-producer and exclusive distributor for KR$NA’s first-ever mixtape, titled Yours Truly, thereby expanding the scope and depth of their joint operations. The partnership was further highlighted as a landmark moment when Nas, the legendary rapper and founder of Mass Appeal Records, visited India as part of his World Reunion Tour.[58] The concert itself featured several pioneers of the Indian rap scene, making it a historic event for the community. During this time, KR$NA shared exclusive snippets showcasing Nas personally listening to his mixtape Yours Truly prior to its official release, an instance that not only amplified the anticipation surrounding the project but also underscored the significance of the collaboration between Kalamkaar and Mass Appeal Records.[59] [60] [61] [62] [63] [64]
Subsidiaries
[edit]Kalamkaar Indie
[edit]In April 2023, Kalamkaar Records, via their newly created Instagram handle, shared a sneak peek of their latest venture, Kalamkaar Indie.[65] The purpose behind this new label was to support and promote artists at the grassroots level within the indie music scene.
Tours
[edit]In 2021, the record label announced its very first collaborative Indian tour in association with SuperMoon, [66] [67][68] which is an intellectual property owned by ZEE LIVE, a division of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL).[69]
The tour spanned several major Indian cities, including Hyderabad, Gurugram, Goa, New Delhi, and Mumbai.[70] The official lineup featured prominent Kalamkaar artists such as Raftaar, KR$NA, Rashmeet Kaur, Deep Kalsi, Yunan, and Karma.[71] During the Mumbai leg of the tour, the crew surprised the audience by bringing out MC Stan for a special guest appearance,[72] which added to the excitement of the show. Meanwhile, in the New Delhi concert, acclaimed rapper Raja Kumari also joined the Kalamkaar team on stage.[73]
