The Jordanian Electric Power Company (JEPCO) (Arabic: شركة الكهرباء الأردنية المساهمة العامة المحدودة) is a public shareholding company responsible for the distribution and retail supply of electricity in central Jordan. Its concession area includes the governorates of Amman, Zarqa, Madaba, and Balqa. The company is listed on the Amman Stock Exchange under the symbol JOEP.[1]

History

[edit]

The Jordanian Electric Power Company was founded in 1938 as the Amman Electric Company. The company began operations in Amman by replacing kerosene lamps in the city’s streets with electric lighting. This marked the introduction of electricity to Jordan.[2]

In 1947, JEPCO was restructured as a public shareholding company under its current name. Over the following decades, it expanded its concession to include Amman, Zarqa, Madaba, and Balqa, becoming the main electricity distributor in central Jordan.[3]

The company's concession was renewed in 1962 for fifty years.[4]

As part of later reforms, Jordan’s electricity distribution sector was divided among three companies: JEPCO for central Jordan, the Electricity Distribution Company (EDCO) for the south and east, and the Irbid District Electricity Company (IDECO) for the north.[5]

JEPCO has invested in modernizing its infrastructure and adopting GIS and digital mapping technologies to improve service reliability and network management.[6]

Corporate structure and ownership

[edit]

JEPCO operates as a public shareholding company regulated by the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC). Major shareholders include the Social Security Corporation (approximately 23%) and the Government of Jordan (about 2%).[7]

Operations

[edit]

Distribution and supply

[edit]

JEPCO’s primary activity is distributing electricity purchased from the National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) to residential, commercial, industrial, and agricultural consumers. As of 2024, the company served over 1.6 million customers.[8]

Infrastructure and technology

[edit]

The company manages substations, lines, and transformers throughout its concession area. JEPCO has adopted GIS-based systems for outage management, asset tracking, and customer service operations, including ArcGIS for digital mapping and geocoding customer addresses.[6]

Strategic initiatives

[edit]

JEPCO has implemented fire-safe MIDEL transformer liquids since 1997 to improve safety and sustainability.[9]

The company has also partnered with international programs such as the Jordan Utility Partnership Program, providing training to over 260 personnel in Jordanian electricity entities.[10]

Financials

[edit]

JEPCO generates revenue primarily from electricity distribution. In 2023, total revenue reached JD1.001 billion, up from JD985.4 million in 2022. Net profit for 2023 was JD21.5 million, and capital reached JD91.7 million.[11]

As of June 2025, total equity was JD132 million.[12]
