Jeffrey Hmingchullo is an Indian Army soldier serving as an Inspector in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). He is a recipient of the Shaurya Chakra, India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award. Hmingchullo was decorated by President Droupadi Murmu in May 2025 for exceptional bravery during an anti-Maoist operation in Jharkhand.[1]
Early life and career
[edit]Hmingchullo hails from Vengthlang, Rengkai in Churachandpur district, Manipur, India and belongs to the Hmar community.[2] He serves in the 203 CoBRA Battalion of the CRPF, a specialized commando unit trained for counter-insurgency operations in Maoist-affected areas of India.[3]
Shaurya Chakra award
[edit]On 22 May 2025, Jeffrey Hmingchullo was awarded the Shaurya Chakra by President Droupadi Murmu during the Defence Investiture Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan.[1]
According to the official citation, Hmingchullo displayed exemplary leadership and courage during an anti-Maoist operation on 3 April 2023 in Naudiha, Chatra district, Jharkhand. Despite coming under intense hostile fire, he led his team in neutralizing two Maoist insurgents. His actions ensured the safety of his comrades, resulted in the recovery of weapons, and dealt a significant blow to Maoist insurgency in the region.[4][5]
Recognition
[edit]The award was widely reported in both regional and national media. Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma and other leaders congratulated Hmingchullo for bringing honor to the Northeast through his gallantry.[6][3] His recognition is noted as part of the CRPF’s continued role in major anti-Maoist operations in India.[5]
