Jack Daniel Burright (born March 17, 1967) is an American martial artist, instructor, and former law enforcement officer. He is best known for his contributions to defensive tactics training, firearms instruction, and the founding of Counter Strikes International (CSI), a martial arts and firearms training organization.

Jack Daniel Burright was born on March 17, 1967, in Corvallis, Oregon. He obtained his General Education Development (GED) in lieu of graduating from high school. Burright later enrolled at Linn-Benton Community College in Albany, Oregon, where he studied criminal justice. Burright trained in boxing under Charles Linnegar and Tae Kwon Do under Master Hyong Shin, earning a black belt in 1989. He continued his education at Southwest University in Kenner, Louisiana, earning a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.[1]

Burright married Coleen Burright in 1993. Coleen is a published author and works in the legal field. The couple has two daughters:

Career

Burright began his law enforcement career in 1988 as a reserve deputy sheriff at the Benton County Sheriff’s Office. In 1990, he was appointed as a martial arts instructor at Linn-Benton Community College[2]. The following year, Burright joined the City of Cannon Beach as a sworn police officer and opened a martial arts school in the area.

In 1992, Burright became a Defensive Tactics Instructor at the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) in the Oregon Police Academy. By 1993, he returned to Benton County as a deputy sheriff and founded Counter Strikes International (CSI), a martial arts and firearms training organization in Albany, Oregon. Over the years, Burright earned his 2nd and 3rd-degree black belts under Master Hyong Shin and advanced to 4th, 5th, and 6th-degree black belts through the mentorship of Howard Webb and the American Law Enforcement Martial Arts Association (ALEMAA).[3]

While serving in law enforcement, Burright held several positions, including Field Training Officer, Corporal, and Patrol Division Sergeant. He was actively involved in the SWAT Team, serving as a Counter Sniper/Observer, Entry Team Member, Team Leader, and later, SWAT Commander.[4] Burright also served as the lead combatives and lead pistol instructor for the Benton County Sheriff’s Office[5]. He remained a senior instructor at the Oregon Police Academy until 2004.

In 1996, Burright was selected to help train security forces for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.[6] He participated in role-playing training scenarios that prepared security personnel to manage potentially dangerous situations.[7] His training focused on managing confrontational encounters and preparing officers for high-pressure scenarios.

Beyond his law enforcement career, Burright returned to Linn-Benton Community College as an adjunct professor, where he taught criminal justice and personal self-defense courses.[8] He has operated multiple martial arts schools, promoting over 54 students to black belts and conducting over 4,000 belt promotions. Burright continues to lead Counter Strikes International (CSI), offering firearms training programs for both civilians and law enforcement professionals nationwide.

Counter Strikes International (CSI)

Counter Strikes International (CSI) is a martial arts and firearms training organization that offers a variety of training programs. The organization provides instruction in Tae Kwon Do, Kap Ki Do, Krav Maga, and Boxing, along with firearms training, including Concealed Handgun Licensing, live fire instruction, and courses tailored to both civilian and law enforcement needs.

In addition to martial arts and firearms training, CSI offers courses in de-escalation techniques and managing potentially life-threatening situations for businesses and groups. For law enforcement professionals, CSI provides "Train the Trainer" courses to help instructors develop skills for teaching others.

The organization is known for its family-oriented training environment and its focus on practical, real-world skills. CSI's training facility is located in Albany, OR.

Recognition

Burright has received recognition for his contributions to law enforcement and training. His expertise has been sought in both local and national contexts, including expert testimony in use-of-force cases. Burright was featured in local news articles for his role in training security forces for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.[6] His involvement in the Olympics earned him further recognition as an expert in defensive tactics and firearms training. He also received letters of appreciation for his instruction in the BCSO’s Field Training Officer program, his leadership in the Sheriff's Department, and his work in the community.
