Draft:I Hate Sex
Submission declined on 3 June 2025 by Cabrils (talk). This submission's references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article—that is, they do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject (see the guidelines on the notability of music-related topics). Before any resubmission, additional references meeting these criteria should be added (see technical help and learn about mistakes to avoid when addressing this issue). If no additional references exist, the subject is not suitable for Wikipedia.

Comment: Well done on creating the draft, and it may potentially meet the relevant requirements (including WP:GNG, WP:BAND) but presently it is not clear that it does. As other reviewers have noted, Wikipedia's basic requirement for entry is that the subject is notable. Essentially subjects are presumed notable if they have received significant coverage in multiple published secondary sources that are reliable, intellectually independent of each other, and independent of the subject. To properly create such a draft page, please see the articles ‘Your First Article’, ‘Referencing for Beginners’ and ‘Easier Referencing for Beginners’. The draft does not appear to show that the subject has any notability beyond the average coverage for similar short-lived bands (see WP:ROTM). Also, if you have any connection to the subject, including being the subject (see WP:AUTOBIO) or being paid, you have a conflict of interest that you must declare on your Talk page (to see instructions on how to do this please click the link). Please familiarise yourself with these pages before amending the draft. If you feel you can meet these requirements, then please make the necessary amendments before resubmitting the page. It would help our volunteer reviewers by identifying, on the draft's talk page, the WP:THREE best sources that establish notability of the subject. It would also be helpful if you could please identify with specificity, exactly which criteria you believe the page meets (eg "I think the page now meets WP:BAND criteria #3, because XXXXX"). Once you have implemented these suggestions, you may also wish to leave a note for me on my talk page and I would be happy to reassess. Cabrils (talk) 23:09, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
Comment: They would need to pass the criteria at WP:NBAND to be accepted. Theroadislong (talk) 20:38, 13 September 2024 (UTC)

I Hate Sex was a Canadian screamo band based in Edmonton, Alberta from 2015 to 2018. The band's sole constant member was vocalist and lyricist Nicole Boychuk. They have been credited as an influential band in Canada's screamo scene.[3][4]
History
[edit]I Hate Sex was formed in 2015 by MacEwan University classmates Nicole Boychuk and Ashton Burns, who recruited bassist Jibril Yassin and drummer Curtis Burton through social media. The name comes from a joke Boychuk made in a group chat.[5]
In 2015, I Hate Sex released a two-track demo with Driftwood Records, followed shortly by the EP Circle Thinking. This EP gained attention for its intense and cathartic lyrics and its abrasive sound,[2][4][6][7][8] and the band began to earn a devoted online following.[2][5]
After lineup changes in late 2015 and early 2016, the band went on a nine-day tour in Japan organized by a fan in summer 2016; they then released their only LP, World of Grief, in 2017.[2] In 2018, Vice writer Dan Ozzi selected it as one of the albums that best represented the previous decade of hardcore.[3] The band supported the album with a European tour, including a spot in the lineup of Miss the Stars Festival in Berlin.[9] They also played at Sled Island Music and Arts Festival in Calgary in summer 2017.[10] Aside from stand-alone releases, I Hate Sex released three split EPs with various other acts. They played their final show in August 2018 as a headliner of New Friends Fest in Toronto.[11]
I Hate Sex has received particular recognition as a female-fronted band in the predominantly male genres of screamo and hardcore punk.[5][12][13] Boychuk learned screaming from a workshop at the Edmonton edition of Not Enough Fest,[2] a festival intended to promote inclusion of people of diverse genders and sexualities in music.[14] Explaining her decision to take up screaming, she said "I'm awful at singing. I can't hit notes and I sound like a dying whale."[2] She has since given screaming lessons at other events with a similar mission of promoting inclusivity.[12] The band is noted for DIY ethic and its advocacy for safe spaces in the music community.[2][5]
