Gadadharpur is a village in the Sainthia subdivision of Birbhum district, West Bengal, India. It falls under the jurisdiction of Bajitpur Gram Panchayat. History and Recent Events
[edit]Gadadharpur is located near Sainthia, where a significant railway accident took place. The 2010 Sainthia train accident occurred on 19 July 2010, when the Uttar Banga Express collided with the Vananchal Express at Sainthia Junction railway station. The accident resulted in at least 66 fatalities and more than 150 injuries, making it one of the worst railway disasters in West Bengal in recent decades.[2][3]
Demographics
[edit]According to the 2011 Census of India, Gadadharpur had a total population of 893, of which 465 were males and 428 females. There were about 220 households. The literacy rate was approximately 68%.[4] The most widely spoken language is Bengali. Hindi is rarely spoken. The majority of the population are Hindus, with a small Muslim minority, mostly from the nearby village.
Geography
[edit]The nearest river is the Dwarka River, while the nearest massive river, Mayurakshi River flows near Sainthia. The climate is similar to that of Birbhum district in general.
Economy and facilities
[edit]Gadadharpur hosts a small local market where villagers can buy food and basic goods, and it is considered larger than a typical village market. Farming is the primary occupation of residents. Many people from nearby villages run shops in the Gadadharpur market for their livelihood.
The village has a railway station, which makes it an important transport point for surrounding villages. National Highway 114 passes nearby, connecting it to other parts of the district.
Culture
[edit]Most of the residents celebrate Hindu festivals such as Durga Puja, while Eid al-fitr is also observed between Muslim community. Every October, many villagers attend the annual fair, which attracts visitors from nearby villages.
Transport
[edit]Gadadharpur is connected by road through the National Highway 114, which links nearby towns including Sainthia.[5] The nearest railway station is Gadadharpur Railway Station (GHLE).[6]
