Gabriel Moses is a British-Nigerian photographer, director and filmmaker from South London. Moses designed the 2025 BRIT Awards trophy.
Early Life
[edit]Moses was born and raised in South London. He pursued a degree in business studies but dropped out to pursue his career in photography and videography.[1] Moses drew inspiration for his photography from his South-London Nigerian roots, family photos and magazine cutouts by his sister who was a fashion student.[1] At 18 years, Moses was approached by Nike to produce content for them, leading to his directorial debut 'The Lone Athlete'. [1]
Career
[edit]In 2020, he photographed Pa Salieu for his Dazed cover, making him the youngest photographer to ever shoot a Dazed cover.[2]
In 2024, and in tandem with his FATIMA exhibition in New York, Moses launched a collaborative collection with Denim Tears.[3]
In 2024, he was part of the 9th edition of the Google Creator Labs.[4]
In 2024, he directed the short film “All Day I Dream About Sports”, in collaboration with Pharrell Williams and Adidas. The film debuted at the Dakar Short Film Festival.[5]
In 2024, he was announced as the designer for the 2025 BRIT Awards trophy.[6]
Exhibitions
[edit]In 2023, Moses showcased his first exhibition, Regina. The title Regina translates to queen in Latin and was his way of honoring the women in his life.[7] The exhibition included pictures, which Elizabeth Gregory of The Standard, described as having "His signature of deep, rich and densely pigmented shades remains consistent throughout; stark but rich monochrome interrupted and contrasted with a shock of turquoise, lime green or red".[8] The exhibition also included two films; Regina and Ijó (a word that is used to describe the people who inhabit the Niger Delta). Regina includes video clips from different photoshoots. Ijó on the other hand, features a group of young ballet dancers from the Leap of Dance Academy in Lagos.[8]
In February 2024, Moses had another exhibition "Marsha" at the Anthony Gallery in Chicago. The exhibition was named after his longtime friend and hairdresser.[9] In November to December 2024, Moses showcased "Fatima", in New York.[10]
In 2024, Moses released his first monograph, titled Gabriel Moses: Regina.[11] The photobook includes interviews and texts from cultural figures like Slawn and Clint 419. It also features campaigns and shoots for brands including Louis Vuitton and unseen photographs.[12][13][14][15]
In March to April 2025, Moses will showcase another exhibition, Selah. It includes 70 photographs and 20 short films across fashion, music and sports.[16] The exhibition features films and music videos by Travis Scott, Playboi Carti and Schoolboy Q. It also included portraits of British figures such as Skepta, Slawn and Jude Bellingham.[16][17][18]
Influences and Photography Style
[edit]His productions have been described as being "rich in contrast and deeply saturated, often exploring plain backgrounds to draw the focus on his subject."[19]
His photography has been described as having "rich, deep palettes and an atmospheric dance between light and shadow."[20]
It has also been described as having a "Baroque essence", "brooding colorways" and "richly textured geometric settings."[21]
Controversy
[edit]In 2024, Moses called out Lisa, a member of Blackpink for plagiarizing the music video for the song FE!N by Travis Scott, that he directed.[22][23][24]
Awards and Recognition
[edit]Moses was part of the BoF 500 class of 2024.[25]
