Fahad Al Farabi (born 2008) is a Bangladeshi student, amateur astrophotographer, and chess player. He is noted for constructing a homemade telescope, the NEKO-K-1, which has been featured in national and local media for its design, cost-effectiveness, and public engagement.[1][2]

About
[edit]Early life
[edit]Fahad Al Farabi was born in 2008 and raised in Mekutari village, Rajarhat Upazila, Kurigram District, Bangladesh.[1] His father, MD Joynul Abedin, works as a food safety inspector at Ulipur Health Complex, and his mother, Mst Parvin Khondokar, is a teacher at Shishu Niketon in Rajarhat. His elder brother, Fahmid Al Jaber, has been a key influence in his scientific interests.
From the age of four or five,Fahad Al Farabi developed a fascination with the solar system and the universe after his brother explained planetary motion using toys. Fahmid Al Jaber, an avid reader of science books, often conducted home experiments, with Farabi volunteering for many of them. These early experiences sparked Farabi’s curiosity about astronomy
In 2019, while He is in class 6, he built his first optical device, a homemade monocular. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the brothers constructed two small experimental telescopes, but the work stopped due to a shortage of materials and funding. By late 2023,Fahad Al Farabi had sourced the essential components for a fully functional telescope, and after completing his SSC examinations in 2024, he built the NEKO-K-1 within one and a half months.[2][3]
Telescope project
[edit]The NEKO-K-1, named after Fahad Al Farabi’s pet cat, weighs about 12 kg and incorporates PVC piping, optical mirrors and lenses, a focuser, a wooden mount, and a custom-made metal “3D spider” component.[1] The project cost approximately ৳17,000–18,000, significantly lower than the price of comparable telescopes available in Bangladesh.[2] Funding came partly from scholarship earnings from his chess competitions, with the remainder provided by his elder brother.[3]
Fahad Al Farabi has expressed plans to upgrade the mount to a lever system and to learn mirror-making techniques to produce affordable telescopes locally.
Chess career
[edit]Fahad, Al Farabi is a FIDE-rated chess player (ID: 10273158) with standard and rapid ratings of 1735 and 1854 (inactive as of 2025).
He has competed in multiple national-level events, including:
- **Sheikh Kamal 47th National ‘B’ Chess Championship (2022)** – Ranked 90th
- **Marcel 2nd Division Chess League (2022)** – Team placed 11th
- **Sheikh Kamal National Youth Chess Championship, Under-18 (2023)** – Ranked 7th
- **Sheikh Kamal 2nd Bangladesh Youth Games (Team Event)** – 4th place
These achievements earned him recognition both in Kurigram and nationally, as well as scholarships that helped fund his telescope project.[3]
Recognition
[edit]Farabi’s work on the NEKO-K-1 has been featured in several Bangladeshi news outlets, including The Daily Post[1], Prothom Alo[4], Jaijaidin[5], Protidiner Sangbad[6], and Desh Rupantor.[3]
