Exotec (/eɡ.zo.tɛk/; formerly Exotec Solutions) is a French robotics company that develops warehouse automation systems combining autonomous mobile robots and software. Founded in 2015 by engineers Renaud Heitz and Romain Moulin, the company gained early attention for its Skypod goods-to-person system and its first large deployment with French e-retailer Cdiscount in 2017.[1][2] Exotec was selected for the French government's Next40 index in 2021.[3]

History

[edit]

Exotec was founded in 2015 by two former BA Systèmes engineers, Renaud Heitz and Romain Moulin.[4] The company’s early deployments focused on e-commerce fulfillment, notably with Cdiscount in 2017.[2]

Exotec raised a €15 million Series B round in 2018,[5] followed by $90 million in 2020,[6][7] and a $335 million Series D in January 2022 led by Goldman Sachs Growth Equity that valued the company at $2 billion.[8]

In 2023, Exotec inaugurated its "Imaginarium" innovation campus in Wasquehal and reported more than 4,200 robots deployed worldwide and around 550 employees.[9]

Technology

[edit]

Exotec’s core product line is the Skypod system, a modular goods-to-person solution in which small autonomous robots retrieve totes from high-density racks and deliver them to ergonomic picking stations. The robots operate in three dimensions and are coordinated by fleet management software.[1] Recent updates to the Skypod system added integrated buffering, sequencing, and packing functionality, increasing throughput by up to 50% and storage density by 30%.[10]

Selected deployments

[edit]
  • Cdiscount – First large-scale commercial deployment in 2017 at the company’s Bordeaux/Cestas fulfillment center.[2]
  • Fast Retailing (Uniqlo) – In 2019, Uniqlo’s parent company announced partnerships with two robotics startups, including Exotec, to automate warehouse operations.[11][12]
  • Gap Inc. – Adoption of the Skypod system for returns processing in North America.[13]
  • Carrefour, Decathlon – Exotec systems deployed in retail and e-commerce distribution centers.[14]

Recognition

[edit]

Exotec and Cdiscount received the “David with Goliath” award in 2018 for collaboration between a startup and a large enterprise.[15] In 2021, Exotec was included in the French government’s Next40 index.[3] By 2024, the company operated over 7,000 robots across 100+ customer sites worldwide and was valued at over $2 billion.[16]
