Demographics and Education

[edit]

Chimmer (also known as Tsimer) is a village in the Noorabad tehsil of Kulgam district, Jammu and Kashmir, India, located 20 kilometers from the main town of Kulgam. The population of Chimmer Noorabad is estimated to be around 19,500 (as of 2025). The village is known mainly for the shrine of Sheikh‑ul‑Alam (RA) as well as horticulture and livestock-related economic activity. [1]

History and Spiritual Legacy

[edit]

Chimmer hosts the shrine of Sheikh‑ul‑Alam (RA), also known as Nund Rishi. The saint is believed to have spent 12 years in meditation in the area, and the shrine remains a local spiritual landmark. [2] The shrine receives the most visitors on Thursdays and Fridays and during annual devotional gatherings. At this ziyarat, devotees knot threads as a votive act signifying their hopes and prayers; this practice reflects their faith and belief that such offerings will help in the fulfillment of their dua's. [1]

Geography and Connectivity

[edit]

Located in the foothills of the Pir Panjal range, Chimmer lies about 20 km from Kulgam. It has road links to Srinagar, Anantnag, Pulwama, and Shopian supported by local bus and video coach services. it also include government bus services like SRTC, which are more affordable. [3]

Chimmer’s population is approximately 19500, with a literacy rate reportedly above 70%, and many residents are employed in government or public sector roles; most people work in police and education departments. The village has six education institutes, including Hanfia Noor‑ul‑Aloom Middle School, a high school, a primary school, and Madarsa Bagh‑e‑Sheikh‑ul‑Alam [4]. [4]

Economy

[edit]

The local economy primarily revolves around horticulture (apples), trade outside Kashmir, and walnut cultivation that supports many households. [5]

  • **Seasonal livestock trading of animals and dairy products serves nearby districts and livestock trade during Eid al-Adha.
  • **Remittance-linked trade**: Some youths engage in shawl, dry fruit, and retail businesses outside Kashmir, sending income home. Most of the people migrate from Kashmir to other regions for trade, as heavy snowfall makes agriculture unfeasible; it provides an important source of income [6]. [6]
  • **Contributions from ziyarat shareef** Ziyarat Shareef contributes to the village economy through annual donations from devotees, including money, livestock, gold, and silver, estimated at approximately ₹1 crore.
  • **Auqaf committee role** The Auqaf Committee manages donations from Ziyarat Shareef to maintain the shrine and support village infrastructure

Security and Recent Events

[edit]

Chimmer has been mentioned in media reports due to militant-related encounters. In June and July 2021, combined operations in the village resulted in the deaths of LeT-affiliated militants, a matter confirmed by multiple news outlets. [7][8]
