  • Comment: ONErpm source is a press release and doesn't do anything for notability. Other two sources look fine, but much of the rest of the article is unsourced and as such, the current sourcing does not sufficiently establish notability. Rambley (talk) 16:39, 30 June 2025 (UTC)

Chance Peña (born February 18, 2000) is an American singer-songwriter from Tyler, Texas. He has released two albums: Ever-Shifting, Continual Blossoming (2024), and When I Change My Mind I Don't Mean It (2025).

Early life

[edit]

Chance Peña was born in Tyler, Texas.[1] His parents, Michelle and Cune Peña are both entrepreneurs, owning multiple gyms and a fitness business.[2] He has a brother and sister, Jacob, and Reagan.[3]

Peña notes how his parents were supportive or his interest in pursuing music, and in a TMRW Magazine article, recalled his pastor saying to "watch for your kid's giftings... see the things they're passionate about, and just encourage them in those things." At age 8, Peña got a drum kit, and his brother got a guitar, but they swapped. At age 11, he wrote his first song, and started sharing his music. He began his career opening for local musicians and would sing at bars and joints.[2]

Career

[edit]

The Voice (2015)

[edit]

Peña decided to enroll as a contestant for The Voice when his father found an ad for it on a flyer.[4] In 2015, at the age of 15, Peña was a contestant on The Voice (season 9), and for his Blind Audition sang "I See Fire" by Ed Sheeran, which was a track commissioned for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug in 2013. However, only Adam Levine turned around, telling his fellow judges, Gwen Stefani, Pharrell Williams, and Blake Shelton, "In the history of The Voice screwing up badly files, you guys screwed the pooch."[3]

Peña was first stolen by Blake in the first Battle Rounds after singing "Wherever You Will Go" by The Calling.[5] He went home after the Knockouts, when he sang "Demons" by Imagine Dragons.[6] After The Voice, he stayed in contact with fellow contestant Zach Seabaugh.[7]

After The Voice

[edit]

After Peña left The Voice, he returned to Tyler and started playing covers for three-hour sets, making $100 per night. He had realized during the competition that the contest show was "not real life" and "if I wanna have anything remotely close to the success of these celebrities on this show, I gotta work hard."[2]

Eventually Peña accepted to do a show for a friend he made from The Voice and two other friends, he and his father flew out to Temecula, California. On the flight home, his father's friend Wayne David in LAX. Peña's father then asked he could give his son some pointers. Peña went to David's office in LA and was asked him: "what do you wanna do? What are you trying to get to?". He was then told to keep playing in gigs and writing, and was then introduced to everyone at his office. Peña followed the instructions and when David emailed him back home, he flew out to Nashville for songwriting sessions and finally landed a publishing deal at 17 years old. Although the experience changed his live, it primarily gave him the opportunity to buckle down and work while also making music for a living. Peña said, "I’ve been at it for years. That's why, probably until I was 21, I was just doing five, six sessions a week, writing as much as I can, writing for sync and stuff."[2]

Afterwards, Peña continued to write, produce, and develop songs that reflect his life and style. His music has appeared in various television shows and movies like Netflix's Virgin River ABC's Nashville, The CW's Roswell, New Mexico, Freeform's Siren and the film Five Feet Apart.[8] Peña has also written with singers such as Zach Seabauch and Hayd. He also co-wrote "Conversations In The Dark" with John Legend in 2020.[9]

In September 2024, Peña released his debut album Ever-Shifting, Continual Blossoming.[10] And in August 2025, he released his second album When I Change My Mind I Don't Mean It.[11]

Music style

[edit]

TMRW Magazine described Peña as "calm, warm, precise, strong, dependable, stolid." and his music as "introspective, immersive, and organic." In the article, it is also mentioned that as a performer, "his earthy, gravelly voice taps into an edgy, emotional brand of flannels-in-the-forest folk that fits perfectly over deep quarter note kick drums and acoustic guitars."[2]

Pẽna's biggest inspirations are Kid Cudi,[4] Passenger, Gregory Alan Isakov, Bon Iver, Kodaline, The Lumineers, and has opened shows for the latter two. Peña recalled going to one of his first concerts in Dallas to see The Lumineers, and their song "Slow it Down" had a "lasting impression on him".[2]

Personal life

[edit]

Peña is based in Los Angeles, California where he continues to write and produce his music. He often alternates his living between LA and his home back in Tyler. But he stays true to his roots in Tyler, saying that is his preferred home, where most of his friends live.[2] His paternal family is from Mexico and speak Spanish rather than English. However, he grew up speaking Spanish only to a conversational level.[12]

Peña has expressed appreciation for the impact his parents have had in helping him start his career as a musician, understanding that "music 100% is priority one. But you gotta have business smarts, and that's one area where they really taught me."[2]
