Benjamin Hartmann (born 14 December 1987 in Amberg, Germany), known professionally as Ben Ann and Tocaben, is a German DJ and music producer. He has appeared at the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) and performed in clubs in Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Egypt. His releases are distributed on platforms such as Spotify and Beatport.[1] Hartmann is also the founder of the fashion and activism label Human Blood, which has been covered in German media.[2][3]
Life
[edit]Hartmann was born in Amberg (Upper Palatinate) and grew up in Freudenberg.[4] He later moved to Spain.
Career
[edit]Music
[edit]Hartmann began performing as a DJ in 2022 in Barcelona. As Ben Ann, he works mainly in circuit and tribal house, while under the alias Tocaben he focuses on afro-house and melodic techno. He has performed at venues such as Sala Apolo (Barcelona), NY.Club (Munich), Humboldthain Club (Berlin), and was included in the official program of the Amsterdam Dance Event.[5][6][7]
Human Blood
[edit]In 2019, Hartmann founded the fashion label Human Blood. The label became known for its attempt to trademark the activist hashtag #wirsindmehr ("we are more"); the registration was later rejected to prevent monopolisation.[2][8] Human Blood supported the NGO Mission Lifeline in purchasing a rescue vessel.[3] Partnerships with companies were cancelled after executives made public statements opposing refugee aid.[9][10] In 2022, Hartmann announced his departure from the label.[11]
Reception
[edit]Hartmann and Human Blood were covered in several media outlets including W&V, MÄNNER.Media, and Onetz.[2][3] In 2020, the magazine Vice discussed the label critically in the context of its use of Black Lives Matter slogans on T-shirts.[12] He was also mentioned in the German tabloid Bunte.[13]
