BIOPAP S.r.l. (/ˈbaɪ.oʊ.pæp/, Italian: [ˈbi.oˌpap]), commonly known as BIOPAP, is an Italian company based in Milan, Lombardy. Founded in 2001 by Michelangelo Anderlini and Filippo Rossi, the company specializes in the production of biodegradable and compostable food packaging.[1]

History

[edit]

Biopap was founded in the early 2000s with the aim of offering a sustainable alternative to the traditional single-use food packaging.[2] From the beginning, the company focused on the use of cellulose from certified forests and on the development of containers that could combine resistance, versatility, and compostability.[3]

Over the years, Biopap has developed technologies and patents in the field of compostable materials, positioning itself as an innovator in the European market for sustainable food packaging.[3]

In 2023, the company inaugurated a new production plant in Settimo Milanese, designed according to zero-emission and zero-waste principles. The facility is powered by renewable energy and allows Biopap to double its annual production capacity from 50 to 100 million containers.[4]

In September 2023, Biopap adopted the legal status of a Benefit Corporation (Società Benefit), properly including social and environmental objectives in its corporate charter alongside economic goals.[3]

Corporate affairs

[edit]

Environmental practices and initiatives

[edit]

BIOPAP describes sustainability as key to its business model. The company observes a range of environmental practices and initiatives.

Renewable energy and carbon footprint

[edit]

BIOPAP states that all electricity used in its production facilities comes from certified renewable sources.[10] Since 2001, the company has installed photovoltaic panels on its rooftops, and with the inauguration of a new production site in 2023, the share of self-produced renewable electricity is expected to exceed 60 %.[10]

Eco-design and energy efficiency

[edit]

BIOPAP applies eco-design principles to its packaging, focusing on renewable raw materials, weight reduction, and compostability.[10] The company reports that its buildings are designed according to bioclimatic criteria to reduce energy demand, with 100% LED lighting systems equipped with presence and brightness controls. Through updates to machinery and HVAC systems, electricity consumption per unit produced has been reduced by 54% compared to 2018.[10]

Raw materials and certifications

[edit]

BIOPAP states that it sources raw materials from Nordic European forests managed without pesticides or artificial irrigation, with biodiversity maintained.[10] Its products are certified under both the PEFC and FSC standards.[10]

Waste management and circular economy

[edit]

The company operates with zero waste from production: all trimmings and offcuts are recycled by partner paper mills.[10] Non-conforming but usable products are donated to charitable organisations for use in social catering.[10] BIOPAP’s packaging is biodegradable and compostable, designed to be recovered in composting facilities and re-enter the biological cycle as soil improver.[10]
