Avatar Airbender is a steel shuttle roller coaster located in the Mall of America in Bloomington Minnesota.[2] Manufactured by Intamin, the ride is an Intamin Surfrider model, featuring a U-shaped track and a spinning disc vehicle that shuttles riders back and forth along the track.[3] It officially opened on March 15, 2008, as part of the grand opening of Nickelodeon Universe.[4]
Ride Characteristics
[edit]The ride uses a Linear Induction Motor (LIM) launch system to accelerate the disc back and forth along the track. Each launch increases in power, sending the vehicle higher up the curved vertical spikes on either end. As it traverses the track, the disc spins freely, giving riders varied and unpredictable sensations of motion and changing views throughout the ride cycle.
The track is relatively short, approximately 230 feet (70 meters) in length, but the oscillating motion and spinning dynamic deliver a ride experience that combines elements of both a roller coaster and a flat ride. The vehicle reaches a maximum height of 70 feet (21.3 meters) at the peaks of the track and a top speed of approximately 30mph (48km/h).[5]
The entire ride experience lasts around 1 minute, after which the vehicle gradually comes to a stop at the center of the track.
Theme
[edit]Avatar Airbender is themed after the animated television series Avatar: The Last Airbender.[6] It features a U-shaped track with a height of approximately 70 feet (21 meters) and reaches speeds up to 30 mph (43kph).[7] Riders sit in outward-facing circular cars that spin as they are launched back and forth along the track. Avatar Airbender replaced the central Charlie Brown fountain area from the previous Camp Snoopy layout. [8]
Downtime
[edit]Like many launch roller coasters, Avatar Airbender occasionally experiences downtime due to routine maintenance, technical inspections, or operational safety checks.[9] Given its complex Linear Induction Motor (LIM) launch system and spinning mechanism, regular upkeep is essential to ensure smooth and safe operation.[10] Avatar Airbender is only closed during the park’s annual maintenance.[11]
