Career
[edit]Assawongrat has developed his musicianship through the study of classical Thai repertoire and has performed regularly in school and cultural settings.[2][3] He has taken part in music workshops and training programs designed for young performers, which gave him early experience with audiences beyond the classroom. His family has been noted as an influence on his musical development, encouraging both his study of the khlui and his understanding of Thai cultural traditions.[4]
Between 2022 and 2023, he was selected for the "Young Smart Young" program organized by the Ministry of Culture, a scheme aimed at highlighting talented youth in the arts and culture sector.[1]
During this period he began to compete internationally. In 2022, Assawongrat won the Grand Prize in the World Music category (Thai flute, ages 10–13) at the International Youth Music Competitions in Atlanta. The same year, he received a Platinum Medal in the Rising Star – Traditional Flute category at the Canadian International Music Competition. These early prizes helped establish his reputation among youth musicians specializing in traditional instruments.
In September 2023, Assawongrat was formally recognized by the Royal Thai Consulate-General, New York in New York following his achievements in international music competitions. The Consulate hosted a luncheon in his honor on 1 September 2023, where he was invited to perform as part of the cultural program. He also appeared at the Prize Winner Recital of the International Youth Music Competitions at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music in New York City on 3 September 2023.[5]
Earlier that year, he had achieved First Place in the World Music Instrument – Thai Flute (13–15) category at the Young Friends Arts International Music Competition. As part of the recognition linked to this award, he was also invited to participate in the Prize Winner Recital of the International Youth Music Competitions at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music in New York City on 3 September 2023. The recital provided an opportunity for award-winning young musicians from different countries to showcase their talents, with Assawongrat representing Thai traditional music on an international stage.[6]
Outside of competitions, Assawongrat has represented Thailand in cultural exchange programs. In South Korea, he performed the well-known piece ค้างคาวกินกล้วย together with dance accompaniment and was awarded a gold medal.[3] In 2024, he took part in the Sino–Thai International Arts Exchange in China, an event intended to strengthen cooperation between the two countries through youth arts and performance.[7]
