Asankhaya Sharma is an Indian cybersecurity expert, software engineer, and technology leader. He is the Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Patched, a cybersecurity firm that leverages generative AI to create automated, secure code fixes.[1] Sharma has held leadership roles at several cybersecurity companies, including Veracode and has contributed to research in software verification and security.
Early Life and Education
[edit]Sharma was born in India and completed his high school education at Kendriya Vidyalaya Shahibaug, Ahmedabad. He was awarded the Arun Lal Endowment Fund Scholarship by the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) for academic excellence.[2]
Sharma pursued his undergraduate studies at the National Institute of Technology, Warangal (NIT Warangal), earning a bachelor's degree in computer science. During his time there, he received a merit scholarship and co-founded tech organizations such as O(n) Software Labs and the Warangal OpenSolaris User Group.
After graduation, Sharma joined Microsoft as a software engineer, where he contributed to the development of SQL Server 2008 and Visual Studio 2010. He later pursued a Ph.D. in Computer Science at the National University of Singapore (NUS), where he conducted research on formal methods for program verification. His thesis, titled Certified Reasoning for Automated Verification, was supervised by Prof. Chin Wei Ngan.[3] During his Ph.D., Sharma co-founded the startup Okyasoft and helped establish the PyData Singapore community to promote open-source data science.[4]
Career
[edit]After completing his Ph.D, Sharma transitioned into cybersecurity. He joined SourceClear, a venture-backed application security startup, as Head of Research and Development. He led the development of security analysis products until SourceClear was acquired by CA Technologies in 2018.[5] Following the acquisition, Sharma took on a leadership role at Veracode, where he became Director of Software Engineering and site leader for Veracode Singapore from 2019 to 2022. In 2023, Sharma joined the Singapore Deep-Tech Alliance (SDTA) venture-building program and founded Securade.ai, an AI-powered workplace safety startup.[6] Later in 2023, he became CTO of Patched, focusing on AI-driven automated vulnerability remediation.[7]
Research and Publications
[edit]Sharma's research focuses on software verification, security, and the application of AI in cybersecurity. He has published several papers in top-tier conferences, including the International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE) and the IEEE/ACM International Conference on Mining Software Repositories (MSR). His paper at MSR 2020 received the ACM SIGSOFT Distinguished Paper Award.[8]

In 2023, he was interviewed on the "Cybersecurity Unplugged" podcast, where he discussed the role of generative AI in automated code fixes.[14] His startup Patched was also covered by Analytics India Magazine, highlighting its innovative use of AI for code reviews and documentation.[15]
