Runway Aleph is a video editing and manipulation model developed by Runway AI Inc., released on July 25, 2025. The model edits existing video footage through text prompts, performing tasks including object manipulation, camera angle generation, lighting modifications, and style transfers.[1]
History
[edit]Aleph was announced on July 25, 2025, with initial access provided to Enterprise customers and Creative Partners, followed by availability to paid subscribers.[2] The model differs from Runway's previous models (Gen-1 and Gen-2) by focusing on editing existing footage rather than generating image or video from text prompts.[3]
Technical Specifications
[edit]Aleph analyzes existing video footage to understand scene context, lighting, perspective, and object relationships before applying modifications.[2] The model can perform both local edits affecting specific objects and global modifications changing environmental conditions within a single interface.[2]
The model processes videos up to 5 seconds per generation and crops videos that don't match supported resolutions.[4][5] For videos longer than 5 seconds, users select portions through a trimming interface. The maximum file size is 64 MB.
Functionality
[edit]Object Manipulation
[edit]
Aleph can add, remove, or transform objects within video scenes.[6][7] Documented examples include removing reflections, adding crowds to scenes, and inserting products into existing footage.[8] The model can also generate continuations of existing video sequences.[6][7]
Lighting and Style Modifications
[edit]The model can modify lighting conditions including time of day and weather conditions.[6][7] Style transfer capabilities allow application of different visual aesthetics to existing footage, with users able to reference images for color and visual treatment guidance.[4]
Camera Perspective Generation
[edit]Aleph can generate alternative camera angles from existing footage.[2][9] According to CineD, the model can generate medium shots, close-ups, and reverse angles from single camera footage.[8]
Additional Capabilities
[edit]
The model includes green screen functionality for isolating subjects from backgrounds and can modify character appearances while maintaining movement patterns.[1][6] Aleph can also replicate original camera movement while generating new content.[10][5]
Interface and Operation
[edit]Aleph operates through Chat Mode and Tool Mode interfaces within Runway's platform.[4][9] Prompts typically include action verbs ("add," "remove," "change," "replace," "re-light," "re-style") followed by descriptions of modifications.[4] Users can include reference images to guide modifications and specify resolution requirements in prompts.[11]
Documented Usage
[edit]Production Workflows
[edit]
Production companies have reported using Aleph for generating additional camera coverage from single-camera footage.[8][5] Post-production applications include object removal, environment modification, and lighting adjustments.[1][3][12]
Content creators have documented using the model for storyboarding, style testing, and creating visual materials for pitch decks.[13]
Commercial Applications
[edit]Advertising agencies use Aleph for product placement in existing footage and modifying brand content.[3]
Architecture firms employ the model for visualizing designs in different environmental conditions.[3]
E-commerce teams use it for product visualization without additional photography.[3][14]
Content Creation
[edit]Independent creators use Aleph for social media video production, with documented applications on YouTube and TikTok. The model's style transfer capabilities are used for creating themed content series.[13]
Access and Availability
[edit]Aleph is available to users on Runway's Standard plan and higher subscription tiers.[13] Free-tier users cannot access the model.[4][9] The model operates within Runway's web-based platform through new sessions and existing projects.[11]
