Race

[edit]

Overview

[edit]

The race was won by the No. 3 Falken Porsche 911 GT3 R of Dorian Boccolacci and factory driver Alessio Picariello ahead of the No. 34 Walkenhorst Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT3 Evo of factory drivers Mattia Drudi and Christian Krognes who, despite finishing first on track, were relegated to second due to a 37 second post-race penalty due to a short pit stop. The No. 98 Rowe BMW M4 GT3 Evo driven by a quartet of factory drivers (Augusto Farfus, Jesse Krohn, Raffaele Marciello and Kelvin van der Linde) rounded out the podium, crossing the line 38.382 seconds after the No. 3 Porsche. The SP9 Pro-Am class was won by the No. 8 Juta Racing Audi R8 LMS Evo II of Frank Stippler, Alexey Veremenko and Vasilii 'Selv' Selivanov ahead of the No. 6 HRT Ford Performance Mustang GT3 driven by Patrick Assenheimer, Dennis Fetzer, Salman Owega and factory driver David Schumacher. The SP9 Pro-Am podium was completed by the No. 35 Walkenhorst Aston Martin of Nico Hantke and Anders Buchardt - who finished a lap down on the Juta Audi. SP9 Am was won by the No. 50 Audi of équipe vitesse driven by Michael Heimrich, Arno Klasen and Lorenzo Rocco which was the only classified finisher in the class; the No. 36 Walkenhorst entry would finish the race but would fail to complete sufficient distance to be classified, and the No. 786 Lamborghini would retire after 20 laps.

Description

[edit]

Frank Stippler would succesfully defend his lead through the opening part of the race, despite an attempt by Mattia Drudi in the No. 34 Walkenhorst Aston Martin to go around the outside - which ultimately resulted in him going wide into turn 1 and dropping to fifth place. The field would largely make it through unscathed with Dennis Olsen in the No. 2 Mustang moving up to second place from fifth on the grid followed by both Falken Porsches. Olsen would end up defending successfully against the two Porsches, despite nearly being caught out by a slow zone caused by the crash of the No. 191 Walkenhorst SP10 entry just before Hohe Acht. This was closely followed by another accident at the Stefan-Bellof-S, which reduced Stippler's lead to a mere car length after it had grown to multiple seconds. Elsewhere, the No. 54 Dinamic Porsche would end up pulling off to the side of the road at the beginning of the Döttinger Höhe, on the first lap, with what was initially reported to be a puncture which caused another slow zone at the first section of the famous straight. On the conclusion of the slow zone, Stippler's Audi and the Mustang of Olsen would pull away from the two Falken Porsches behind while the No. 16 Scherer Sport PHX Porsche would challenge the No. 34 Walkenhorst entry after it would be slow to react but would ultimately be unable to make a move.

Alessio Picariello would go on to attempt a move on the Mustang into Warsteiner-Kurve on the next lap, but Olsen would successfully defend from the move, retaining second place, which would ultimately cause Picariello to drop behind Tim Heinemann in the sister car. Once onto the Nordschleife, Frank Stippler was able to extend his lead to about 5 seconds, possibly due to the Mustang's slower speed through tight corners as a result of the Balance of Performance process (the Mustang had favourable top speed to balance the lap times out). However, his lead would be dissolved by another slow zone at Galgenkopf. Down the Döttinger Höhe, Mattia Drudi was able to pass the Falken Porsche of Alessio Picariello, however he would lose the position back to Picariello before the end of the lap which allowed the Mustang and the sister Porsche to build a slight gap and also allowed the Scherer Sport Porsche of Patric Niederhauser to overtake both cars. Heinemann would attempt a move into turn 1 around the outside of the Mustang but would be successfully repelled by Olsen who retained second place, once again allowing Stippler to extend his lead. Similarly, the sister car of Picariello would dive down the inside of the Scherer Sport Porsche but would successfully retake fourth place, while the Kondo Ferrari would end up challenging the Walkenhorst entry on the exit of the Mercedes-AMG Arena but would ultimately be unsuccessful.

Olsen ended up pitting on the end of lap 4, which would promote the Falken Porsches to second and third, but also gave the duo the opportunity to attack Frank Stippler, who had suddenly lost his large lead. Both Porsches would go on to overtake the Audi of Stippler through Mutkurve, shuffling the Juta Racing entry back to third place after he got caught out by an unfortunately timed slow zone. At the end of lap 5, the No. 3 Falken Porsche would pit, with Alessio Picariello handing over to Dorian Boccolacci, which promoted Stippler's Audi up to second place. The gap would continue to grow between Heinemann and Stippler until the end of lap 6, when Heinemann brought his No. 4 Falken Porsche into the pits where he stayed in the car for a second stint, releasing Stippler into the lead again. Further down the order, much of the SP9 field had also pitted by this point with the No. 16 Scherer Sport and No. 48 Black Falcon Porsches being notable exceptions, with the No. 7 Lamborghini and the Black Falcon Porsche completing the top 3 in the running until the Konrad Lamborghini pitted at the end of the lap.

Once the first pit stops had cycled through at the end of lap 9, the No. 4 Porsche of Heinemann would inherit the lead ahead of the sister car of Boccolacci and the Aston Martin of Christian Krognes. On lap 10, the Scherer Sport Porsche of Patric Niederhauser would use the slipstream of both the Walkenhorst Aston Martin and the No. 3 Falken Porsche to successfully overtake the Aston Martin of Christian Krognes down the Döttinger Höhe, despite the fact that Krognes was attempting to overtake the Falken car. On the following lap, Krognes would immitate Niederhauser and pull off the exact same move to re-overtake the Scherer Sport Porsche and regain third place and then, into turn 1, Boccolacci would end up misjudging his braking and running deep, allowing Krognes to take second place overall, and would put himself under pressure from the Scherer Sport entry. However, by the end of the lap, Boccolacci had overtaken Krognes again and returned to second place.

At the end of lap 13, both Krognes and Boccolacci would bring their cars into the pits to change drivers to Drudi and Picariello respecitvely, promoting Niederhauser's Porsche to second place. Heinemann would follow suit at the end of lap 14, bringing in his No. 4 Porsche to change drivers to Dennis Marschall after a successful double stint, which would also be mirrored by Patric Niederhauser who pitted on the same lap, however the Falken Porsche would end up having an issue during its pit stop which delayed Marschall rejoining the race. The No. 8 Audi, now driven by Vasilii 'Selv' Selivanov, inherited the lead as a result, and would come into the pits at the end of Lap 15, giving the lead over to the No. 3 Falken of Picariello ahead of the Walkenhorst Aston Martin in second and the Rowe BMW in third.

By the end of lap 19, the top 3 has remained the same with the No. 4 Falken Porsche eventually rejoining in sixth place ahead of the Juta Racing Audi in seventh, who was a lap down on the sister Falken car. Due to an unfortunate slow zone timing, the Rowe BMW of Kelvin van der Linde was able to catch up to the back of the Walkenhorst entry of Mattia Drudi and would end up pressuring him until the start of the Döttinger Höhe, but unable to make a move for second place and peeling into the pit lane at the end of the lap to hand over to Raffaele Marciello. On lap 20 No. 7 Konrad Lamborghini would end up colliding with a backmarker, putting it out of the race and causing a slow zone on the exit of the Caracciola-Karussell. The following lap, the Walkenhorst Aston Martin would make its final pit stop, with Drudi handing over to Krognes, who would drive to the finish - however, this pit stop would prove disastrous as it was too short and thus caused the team to receive a 37 second post-race penalty.

Once the final cycle of pit stops was complete, the No. 3 Falken Porsche of Dorian Boccolacci was in the lead, followed by Christian Krognes' Walkenhorst Aston Martin and the Scherer Sport Porsche of Patrick Pilet, though the Rowe BMW of Marciello was close behind. By lap 24, Krognes was beginning to close the gap to Boccolacci, while Marciello was attempting to find a way past Pilet as he had been ever since the last pit stop. On Lap 24, the Kondo Ferrari was challenging the No. 4 Porsche, however was unfortunate with the timing of a slow zone out of the Karussell ultimately delaying the opportunity, which wouldn't reoccur for the Ferrari before the chequered flag. On the final lap, Krognes had closed the gap to the race-leading No. 3 Falken Porsche and he was able to make use of the traffic to take the lead on track as Boccolacci got boxed in behind a Volkswagen Golf at Hocheichen. While being first to take the chequered flag, Krognes would ultimately extend his on-track lead to roughly 7 seconds, which would give him enough of a gap ahead of the Rowe BMW to finish second in the classification.
