Kiyoko Yoshida is voted class president and is immediately sat next to Tsuyoshi Yano who turns up covered in bruises; worrying Yoshida he is being bullied. One day she follows him and realises Yano is the clumsiest person she has ever met, injuring himself multiple times by accident. Yano thanks her for worrying about him. She continues to think about him for several days, leading her to realise she has a crush on him. Yano is absent for several days and Yoshida eventually learns he was hit by a truck. Yano turns out to be ok as the truck didn't actually hit him, but he did run into a wall. After this the two steadily become closer but Yoshida feels like Yano deliberately avoids people. She tries several times to get close to him but each attempt ends with Yano being injured again. Feeling guilty she asks if she can treat his injuries, since she carries a first aid kit everywhere anyway. She also offers to support him in doing whatever he wants to so he won't be injured as often. Yano admits he just wants a normal high school life.

Yoshida's friend Yuzukawa believes Yoshida and Yano are dating, but Yoshida insists she is just helping him live a normal school life. Yano drops his bento but is unconcerned as he drops it every day. Yoshida decides to help him eat lunch in a normal manner. Over several days Tanaka accidentally drops a bin on Yano's head, a crow steals part of his bento, a bookshelf falls on him and he is hit by a basketball. For their safety Yano decides to return to eating alone, but Yoshida decides she will make his lunch for him. The next day a picture frame falls on him, but amazingly he manages to not drop Yoshida's bento and finishes eating it. Yoshida almost confesses but instead demands they eat lunch together every day. In art class they are tasked with drawing each other's faces, but Yano has so many accidents they barely finish. Yoshida realises she has never really looked closely at his face before, making her flustered. She ends up drawing a basic picture of his face but everyone is surprised Yano turns out to be a skilled artist and he draws her face perfectly. At Yano's request they pose for a commemorative photo together, amusing Yuzukawa.

During PE Yoshida worries Yano will be hurt more than normal. Yano turns out to be surprisingly athletic, plus the ball always hits him in the face, which doesn't count so he is impossible to beat. Yoshida finds herself even more attracted to him, until they end up facing each other. Panicking, she throws and misses, so Yano deliberately lets the ball hit him when thrown by someone else, losing the game. As he lost on purpose Yoshida tells him he is cool, surprising him as people usually call him pitiful. Yoshida notices boys usually react when shown any attention from girls, yet Yano barely reacts to her. After school she spots a man as accident prone as Yano who turns out to be Yano's father. Yano ends up inviting her into their house. Yoshida notices they have accident-proofed the entire house. Yoshida almost confesses, but Yano assures her he isn't as great as she thinks. Yoshida starts to wonder if he is acting dumb on purpose. However, his father explains that by necessity Yano focuses entirely on avoiding injury, so it is not surprising he didn't notice she likes him. Yoshida realises Yano might have noticed after all, he is just so different from normal boys he was incapable of reacting and instead was just nice to her all the time.

Yano starts working at a sweet shop. Yuzukawa notices Yoshida is more relaxed and Yoshida admits Yano used to make her anxious, but now she just enjoys spending time with him. She becomes depressed when the teacher changes everyone's seats. Fortunately, classmate Tanaka conspires with the rest of the class to come up with reasons why Yano can't sit in certain places, ensuring he is sat next to Yoshida again. Classmate Hashiba waits until Yoshida is alone and suddenly confesses to her, though he doesn't expect anything from her as he knows she likes Yano. As they are on committee together they realise they actually have a lot in common. Yoshida returns to being anxious. Hashiba wonders why Yoshida likes looking after him, only to end up looking after him himself after another accident. He eventually realises Yano is a genuinely nice person but questions why he is becoming friends with a love rival. Hashiba tells Yano he likes Yoshida and asks how he feels about her. Yano admits he has been thinking of her as a friend so far. Hashiba feels unexpectedly sorry for Yoshida and wishes her luck, confusing her.

Izumi asks Yoshida to hold a study session before exams. As her grades are only average Yoshida desperately invites Yuzukawa to join them as her grades are excellent. Yano manages to destroy his Academic Success charm at the same time, so Yoshida invites him to the session just in case. They are also joined by Tanaka, whose grades are terrible, and Hashiba whose grades are excellent. Yano feels strange watching Yoshida interact with Hashiba. Once exams end everyone decides to celebrate. Yano picks a popular burger restaurant and Izumi finds it funny Hashiba and Yoshida naturally behave as if they are Yano's parents. Again, Yano feels upset watching Hashiba and Yoshida, so he fakes being hurt to get Yoshida's attention. He feels guilty and admits he lied to her straight away but also explains he doesn't want her to think of him as a child. At karaoke Yano sits apart from Yoshida, worrying her he is having a rebellious phase. She eventually asks him if he hates her, but he assures her he could never hate her. In the end Yoshida still doesn't know why Yano avoids looking at her. Yano himself is unsure why, until some coincidentally perfect song lyrics make him wonder if it is love.

Yoshida still feels like there is a wall between her and Yano. Tanaka and Yano encounter Hashiba shopping for shojo manga for his sister. Yano asks Hashiba how he knows he is in love with Yoshida. Put on the spot, Hashiba gives him the manga claiming it will explain everything, but Yano still struggles to understand. Yoshida struggles to believe Yano likes her, and decides to act more like the cheerful Izumi. Yano spends all weekend reading manga to prepare for seeing Yoshida, but when he sees her acting cheerful he realises it is just like the manga. Izumi and Yuzukawa detect Yoshida is actually really uncomfortable, so she returns to normal. Yano quietly confesses he likes her in the middle of class, giving her no opportunity to respond. She decides his "like" can't be the same as her "love" and yet the next morning Yano is the happiest she has ever seen him. When asked by a classmate what type of woman he likes Yano simply answers "Yoshida", embarrassing her. He then spends all day openly flirting with her. When she can't take it anymore she demands to know what he meant by "liking her". Yano admits he meant he loves her, so Yoshida confesses she loves him too.
