Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Disaster management

This is a formal invitation to help build out the new WikiProject Risk, which has significant overlap with this WikiProject. Due to the breadth of the concept of 'risk', many articles that have broad applications are silo'd into specific subjects. Those interested in the generalization and proper organization of risk management principles on Wikipedia may find like-minded editors there. Tule-hog (talk) 23:12, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

University of Edinburgh assignment - Global Health Challenges Pg Online

[edit]

Dear all, this is just to flag up that several students on the Global Health Challenges Pg Online course will be researching and improving (in groups) approximately seven stub articles related to WikiProject Disaster management this month. Namely:

  1. 2024 Western megafires
  2. 1983 famine in Ghana
  3. 2016-17 Zimbabwe floods
  4. 2021 Atami landslide
  5. 2005 Kashmir earthquake
  6. 1988 Nepal earthquake
  7. 1976 Manfredonia accidental release of arsenic

So if you see a flurry of activity on these pages in the coming days then don't worry it is not an attack it is just new student editors trying to help improve and expand these articles using their research. If possible please avoid reverts and provide constructive criticism to help the students learn where they be going wrong whether it is wording, style guidelines or formatting or the types of sources being used etc. Hopefully any issues should be minor in nature but any problems or questions, please ask! Thanks, Stinglehammer 86.167.178.121 (talk) 17:12, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Article bounty: Badush prison massacre

[edit]

Hello,

WikiProject Human rights is posting its first article bounty! Using article bounties, we aim to improve vital articles about human rights. Currently, there are 2 top-importance and 49 high-importance human rights articles that are rated as stubs. Among them is the article Badush prison massacre, which is the subject of this bounty. You are receiving this message because this WikiProject is listed on that article's page. Editors who improve this article may be eligible for various rewards, or "bounties".

Bounties will be awarded for improving the article in the following ways:

For expanding the article to 500 words: The Minor Barnstar

For expanding the article to 1000 words: The Working Wikipedian's Barnstar

For promoting the article to GA: The Human Rights Barnstar

Criteria

[edit]
  • Once the article is at 500 words, if you have contributed at least 1,250 characters on the revision history statistics page, you can reply to this post to receive The Minor Barnstar.
  • Once the article is at 1,000 words, if you have contributed at least 3,000 characters on the revision history statistics page, you can reply to this post to receive The Working Wikipedian's Barnstar.

Participation Check

[edit]

Just curious whether anyone else contributes to this WikiProject these days. I've been trying to stay on top of assessments but haven't done much else for the overall WP. I think WPDM would benefit from an overhaul/grand re-opening type of thing, but I don't see much point in going about it alone. So if you're still interested in this WP please reply to this topic and maybe we can collaborate! Baltarstar (talk) 14:37, 1 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Search and rescue

[edit]

Hey all! Or, hi to Baltarstar at least 😅. Please take a took at this early-stage proposal from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution task force, where the idea of moving out from under WikiProject Water sports to a new WikiProject Search and rescue is floated. I'd ruled out a merger with this WikiProject mostly due to mismatched motivations, but if anyone's interested and doesn't mind a load of wet footprints trailing through here, let us know, it might tip the scales. Aluxosm (talk) 07:22, 9 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for stopping by. Wet footprints are welcome here!
I can understand the hesitation about linking the Search and rescue task force to another low-activity WP. But, I wonder if this might actually present an opportunity. With even a small group of engaged editors like yourselves, we could breathe life back into Disaster Management and give the Search and Rescue task force a stronger, more relevant foundation than starting entirely from scratch.
Disaster management already has thematic overlap with SAR. Both are focused on urgent, high-stakes response efforts. And, I think we'd benefit from shared templates, categories, and article quality initiatives. We could align on shared goals while giving the SAR task force the autonomy it needs.
If even a small number of people from your group were willing to migrate over, I'd be excited to bear the effort of renovating Disaster management. It's something I've thought about for many months now, but with nobody to bounce ideas off of it just seemed pointless. What I'd like to do is break the main page into separate tabs (like WP Military History), tidy everything up a bit, and then start recruiting again.
Whichever way you decide to go, I think giving SAR more space and autonomy is a wise decision. I wish you the best of luck and I hope we get to work together at some point! =) Baltarstar (talk) 12:43, 9 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Very interesting, this is looking more promising! Just to clear it up a little, part of the problem that we're facing at the moment as the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) task force is one of scope creep; we're currently debating a name change to include independent lifeboats in Britain and Ireland, and I suggested that we instead spin up a new independent lifeboat task force under a more commonly aligned parent (WikiProject SAR). If there aren't any complaints to hosing SAR related task forces here though, it works either way! Aluxosm (talk) 03:20, 13 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You're not likely to get any complaints, as it seems to be just me and I fully approve. As for scope creep, migrating to Disaster management might seem to imply a pretty massive escalation in scope, but just like everything else on Wikipedia, it's wholly voluntary whether to engage with those wider topics. My bias for organizing WPs tends to be more along the lines of defining nested categories rather than a preconception of scope. SAR seems conceptually nested under Disaster management. The fact that Disaster management is in a sad state at the moment doesn't strike me as an indication that SAR shouldn't be a task force here, but rather that the WP needs more love. If you and your associates came over, and decided to work SAR to the exclusion of other Disaster management topics, it wouldn't bother me one bit. Mostly what I'd be hoping to get from working with you is a little collaboration on the WP renovations. I think what we stand to gain in the future is a more coherent base of operations from which to organize more assistance for both SAR and the rest of the WP.
Since it seems like this might be starting to appeal to you, I'll draft up a more thorough description of the renovations I have in mind for the WP just to run it by you. Baltarstar (talk) 11:41, 14 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

WP Renovation

[edit]

I propose an overhaul to this apparently defunct WP. I'm bringing this up now because of Aluxosm's recent exploration of possibly migrating the Search and Rescue Task Force over here, but I have always believed this WP was important and that it had good bones. For anyone from the SAR task force, or anyone subscribed to this WP that still has an interest in it, I propose to overhaul the WP pages (explained below), reach out to similar WPs and former WPDM members to request assistance, then remove the WP Inactive tag.

For the overhaul, I think this WP mostly just needs a facelift. It should be easier for users, especially newcomers, to find what they need to meaningfully contribute to this WP. To that end, I think WP Military History is the best in class. I propose breaking up the WP's main page into separate tabs to facilitate navigation, remove as much fluff as possible (like defunct Portals), and do more to explain the importance and use of the various elements that remain. This is the structure I have in mind at the moment:

Tab 1: Main Page (the landing page for the WP, with links to the other tabs, and the following sections)

- Overview: A brief description of the definitions and scope of the WP, inviting new members to contribute.

- News: A bulletin in the sidebar.

- Orientation: A description of the tabs, what they contain, and how new members can get started

- Election Policies: This will have to be under construction for now, because it doesn't make sense for one person to set policies for one person, but if I succeed in attracting more participants than I believe a robust discussion should be held early to put together some kind of Coordinator roles for the WP pages and the Task Forces.

- Central Articles: Links and explanation of the most important articles, topical articles, featured articles, lists, and organizational material like navboxes.

- Related WikiProjects: Links to WPs that have similar, adjacent, or overlapping goals with Disaster Management. I believe it would be wise to keep close relationships with these WPs moving forward as related projects' editors are likely to contribute to many of the same articles.

- WPDM Navbox

- WikiProject Council Navbox

Tab 2: Discussion (the Talk page, as it is. This might be a bit redundant, but WP Military History does it and I reckon that it probably helps new editors find their way around)

Tab 3: Tasks (a summary of how to actually contribute to the WPs articles, with explanations for newcomers)

- Assessments: A brief explanation of Class and Importance, explaining that participants can contribute to elevating each article and that it makes sense to prioritize important ones. I would include some instruction in how to assess, but mostly I would link to essays that do it much better already.

- Backlogs: I don't know how to do it yet, but this is about where I would try to link to backlog detectors for the WPs articles.

- Reviews: Requests for peer-review and article assessments by WP participants

- Mediation?: I'm not sure it's appropriate for a WP to have their own mediation section, but if it's something we did I think this is where it would go so that participants could ask for help.

- Article Alerts: These already exist on the Main Page, it includes things like discussion for deletion, title changes, etc., which could all benefit from participants' commentary and votes.

Tab 4: Awards & Bounties (this is a page for users, particularly Task Force coordinators, to advertise Barnstars directed towards accomplishing particular tasks)

Tab 5: Members & Task Forces (a list of currently active members, sectioned by Task Force, and identifying any coordinators so people know who to contact)

Tab 6: Resources (a one-stop shop of all the bits that participants will likely want to reference or link to on a frequent basis) In no particular order: - Userboxes - Templates - Categories - Essays - WP:MOS - Infoboxes

There you have it, friends. I hope anyone who still has an interest in Disaster management shares their thoughts on this proposal to breathe new life into the WP. Baltarstar (talk) 00:22, 17 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
