Taxonomic revision of Pelodryadidae
[edit]A recent phylogenomic analysis of family Pelodryadidae has proposed a major taxonomic revision, recognising 35 genera, up from three, with hundreds of recombinations.[1]
It does seem to resolve the confusion over Litoria, Cyclorana and Ranoidea/Dryopsophus, where ASW and AmphibiaWeb have substantial disagreements. The latter three are now distinct genera. ASW has adopted the proposed changes, although AmphibiaWeb has not, at least at this time.
ASW now recognises family Pelodryadidae instead of subfamily Pelodryadinae. Our treatment is as a subfamily, so I assume this is a recent change in ASW, or were we following AmphibiaWeb?. — Jts1882 | talk 16:31, 12 August 2025 (UTC)

- Yes, it seems to be are recent change in ASW; see edits to Pelodryadidae and Pelodryadinae on August 26 2022. Plantdrew (talk) 15:49, 14 August 2025 (UTC)
- Ah, that's helpful. I did look at ASW on archive.org and found it treated as Pelodryadidae a few years ago, which surprised me as I though we followed ASW, but I didn't check enough dates. As Geekgecko's edit indicates, they keep changing it. It was Pelodryadidae early in 2022 (February 2022) and then changed to Pelodryadinae (June 2022 and June 2025) and more recently back to Pelodryadidae sometime since June this year. The rank change isn't mentioned in the log of changes, although I assume the 22 June 2025 "First draft of a massive revision of Pelodryadidae" entry is when it occurred.
- It's odd that the main listing doesn't group the three families in a superfamily, but I guess Hyloidea is already taken for a much larger group. — Jts1882 | talk 08:41, 21 August 2025 (UTC)
- Correct, it was Pelodryadidae prior to around 2022, and was changed to Pelodryadinae later that year or the next due to (I assume) Eocene divergence, and so that its sister group Phyllomedusinae could be retained as a subfamily of Hylidae. It seems that due to the size of the recent taxonomic revision, it has gone back to being treated as a distinct family, and Phyllomedusidae too. I have my hands full at the moment but I welcome any updates to the taxonomy to reflect the recent changes. Geekgecko (talk) 19:00, 21 August 2025 (UTC)
Herpetologists
[edit]I've been adding a few herpetologists to Wikipedia in the scope of some parallel ongoing work, e.g. Arne Schiøtz and Jens B. Rasmussen. It is not clear to me if we should consider these as part of the WikiProject? Also, if anyone has time and energy, it would definitely be appropriate to create Wolfgang Böhme (Herpetologist). I have added him to Wikipedia:Requested articles/Biography/Biologists with some details. I haven't got time at the moment to write a full article, unfortunately. — Dr Mark D. Scherz 06:58, 21 August 2025 (UTC)
- I think taxonomists are in the scope of the organismal WikiProjects. However, I don't think anybody has made any systematic effort to add relevant WikiProject banners to the talk pages of taxonomists, but there has been some haphazard additions of WikiProject banners. I'm not sure that non-taxonomists (ecologists, physiologists, molecular biologists using Xenopus laevis as a model system, etc.) should in the scope of organismal WikiProjects.
