Weightlifting at the 1963 Pan American Games was contested at the IV Pan American Games in São Paulo, Brazil, held from April 20 to May 5, 1963. The competition featured seven men’s weight categories, from bantamweight (56 kg) to heavyweight (+90 kg), and followed the traditional Olympic format of press, snatch and clean & jerk. Athletes from eight nations earned medals, with the United States dominating the field by winning six golds and a total of seven medals. Notable American champions included Isaac Berger (60 kg), Anthony Garcy (67.5 kg), Tommy Kono (82.5 kg) and Joseph Puleo (75 kg). Other medal-winning countries included Guyana, the Netherlands Antilles, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, Canada, Barbados and Panama. This event continued the Pan American Games’ tradition of showcasing weightlifting talent from across the Americas since 1951.
