The Utah State University Marching Band (also known as the Aggie Marching Band, or AMB) is the official marching ensemble of Utah State University in Logan, Utah. Established in 1902, the band performs at Maverik Stadium during home football games, regional parades, and university ceremonies. It is part of the university's College of Arts and Sciences—formerly the Caine College of the Arts—and includes students from a wide range of academic disciplines and majors across campus.[1]

Overview

[edit]

The Aggie Marching Band performs pre-game and halftime shows for all Utah State Aggies home football games and at select away and postseason bowl games. The ensemble is known for performing Utah State's traditional songs, including Hail the Utah Aggies and The Scotsman. Its mission is to foster school spirit, musical excellence, and leadership development among student performers.[2]

Membership and structure

[edit]

Membership in the Aggie Marching Band is open to all Utah State students, regardless of academic major. Prior marching experience is not required, and new members receive instruction during band camp in August. The band typically includes more than 200 students each fall, and members may earn academic credit by enrolling in MUSC 3785 through the Department of Music.[2]

Each season begins with the Aggie Marching Band Camp in mid-August and continues through the postseason football schedule. The ensemble rehearses three times weekly during the fall semester and performs at home football games, parades, and university events. Members often continue in the Aggie Pep Band, which performs during basketball season and offers additional scholarships and stipends.[2]

Scholarships and stipends

[edit]

Financial awards are available to members through the Utah State University Music Department. These include Talent Scholarships for both music majors and non-majors, and stipends based on years of service, leadership roles, and performance in good standing. Members of the Aggie Pep Band also receive scholarships for their participation during the basketball season.[2]

Faculty and leadership

[edit]

The band is directed by Dr. Lane Weaver, Director of Athletic Bands and Professional Practice Assistant Professor of Music (trombone). Dr. Cory Evans, Associate Professor and Director of Choral Activities, serves as the band's announcer.[2]

Traditions

[edit]

The Aggie Marching Band performs the Utah State fight song Hail the Utah Aggies and the university's anthem The Scotsman at all major athletic events. During the fight song's refrain, fans and band members raise one arm to form the letter “A,” a tradition known as the “Aggie A.” Each season concludes with the Sounds of the Stadium Concert, a showcase performance featuring highlights from the year's field shows and music selections.[2]
