- @Sj: happy PD Day to you! I start by searching FFD, PUF, and fair use images (some of my methods are listed at User:Wikiacc/Public Domain Day) but it's mostly luck. It just so happened that the Nepenthaceae images were uploaded in two large batches, the bulk of which were still around as fair use, so I checked the deleted contributions for those uploaders.
- I'll take a look at that page! There are certainly synergies among the various efforts to find and retag 1923-63 PD files, especially the deleted ones. Deletions of old images tagged as fair use can be hard to track down, including F5, PROD, and FFD nominations that don't mention years. Wikiacc (¶) 19:35, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Iraq public domain images

A tag has been placed on Category:Iraq public domain images indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

PD Images

- @Maher27777: For new uploads, absolutely! But when the full-size image is already in the Wikipedia file history, I find it easiest to restore the full-size version first, and then move to Commons via established tools. Do you agree? Wikiacc (¶) 21:26, 17 April 2024 (UTC)
PD question
[edit]Hello, when checking the copyrights for non-us works published in 1928 or before what should be the guideline for let's say a movie poster. Is it based on the death of the director or something else? In best regards, Wiiformii (talk) 20:54, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Wiiformii: it's complicated. Honestly, most of the time I just tag {{PD-US-expired-abroad}} and move on.
- Many movie posters from that era were made by artists. In that case, the source country copyright is based on the death of the artist. For example, posters by Josef Fenneker are in copyright in Germany until 2027 because Fenneker died in 1956 (per c:Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Germany). But it's often hard to tell who the artist is. The artist's signature may be present but hard to read.
- If the poster is a still image from the movie, with no other artistic elements, you are probably safe using the death of the director. But you have to look carefully. Wikiacc (¶) 23:38, 14 May 2024 (UTC)

Category question
[edit]I see that you have been doing lots of work in Category:Copy to Wikimedia Commons with hidden file revisions. Do you know if there's a similar category for {{PD-US-1923-abroad}} with hidden revisions? For example File:The Girl from the Provinces.jpg. --Stefan2 (talk) 23:54, 9 January 2025 (UTC)
- Other examples are File:Kri-Kri, the Duchess of Tarabac.jpg and (presumably, although it says unknown date in the FUR) File:Incest (film).jpg. --Stefan2 (talk) 00:05, 10 January 2025 (UTC)
@Stefan2: I'm not aware of such a category. If there aren't too many such files, bulk nominations at WP:REFUND are an option. You certainly could create the category -- for tips on auto-populating it, reading Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/MDanielsBot 9 and/or talking to Mdaniels5757 might be helpful. If you think it would be useful, I'd be happy to file a BRFA to add a category* to those files. - I don't know what the category should be named. There are also other templates such as {{PD-ineligible-USonly}} and {{FoP-USonly}} which we might wish to catch.
- There are some files in the report which are also in the public domain in the source country, for example the first one (File:Lily Flagg.jpg).
- I created quarry:query/58367 to find files with {{mtc}} with missing revisions and found that there were 30 of those. As there were not too many, I added Category:Copy to Wikimedia Commons with hidden file revisions to those. --Stefan2 (talk) 10:10, 10 January 2025 (UTC)
- I find lots of additional {{PD-1923}} and {{PD-US-1923-abroad}} with old deleted revisions when going through quarry:query/89760 (an attempt to find files published in 1929 which are tagged as unfree by looking at the names of the categories of the articles where the files are used). --Stefan2 (talk) 11:41, 10 January 2025 (UTC)
Please be careful with films as the copyright rules are very complex and confusing. See c:COM:VPC#Composers for silent films for a discussion, although there is not a lot of clarity. For single German screenshots, it seems that you should use the death year of the cameraman, not the death year of the director.
There appears to be an article about the film on German Wikipedia, de:Melodie der Welt (1929), where the infobox lists four cameramen: de:Reimar Kuntze (died more than 70 years ago), de:Paul Holzki (died less than 70 years ago), Wilhelm Lehne (death year unknown) and Rudolph Rathmann (death year unknown). I don't know which cameraman's death year we should use. --Stefan2 (talk) 21:34, 13 January 2025 (UTC)

- Films are way too complex. If everyone involved in the creation of the film has been dead for at least 70 years, then it's in the public domain. If no one has been dead for at least 70 years, then it's non-free. In all other cases, it's safer to just add {{PD-US-1923-abroad}} with no expiration year as the list of people whose death years you should check varies depending on the country of the film. It seems that Germany thinks that single frames from a film aren't part of the cinematographic work but that they are separately copyrighted photographs taken by the cameraman and so they seem to follow the cameraman's death year, but I don't know if this is true in other countries. --Stefan2 (talk) 09:44, 14 January 2025 (UTC)

- Following an RfC, administrator elections were permanently authorized on a five-month schedule. The next election will be scheduled soon; see Wikipedia talk:Administrator elections for more information. This is an alternate process to the RfA process and does not replace the latter.
- An RfC was closed with consensus to allow editors to opt-out of seeing "sticky decorative elements". Such elements should now be wrapped in {{sticky decoration wrapper}}. Editors who wish to opt out can follow the instructions at WP:STICKYDECO.
- An RfC has resulted in a broad prohibition on the use of AI-generated images in articles. A few common-sense exceptions are recognized.

- Following a request for comment, a new speedy deletion criterion, G15, has been enacted. It applies to pages generated by a large language model (LLM) without human review.
- Following a request for comment, there is a new policy outlining the granting of permissions to view the IP addresses of temporary accounts. Temporary account deployment on the English Wikipedia is currently scheduled for September 2025, and editors can request access to the permission ahead of time. Admins are encouraged to keep an eye on the request page; there will likely be a flood of editors requesting the permission when they realize they can no longer see IP addresses.

Guide to temporary accounts
[edit]Hello, Wikiacc. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.
Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.
How do temporary accounts work?
- When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern:
~2025-12345-67(a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5). - All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
- A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
- As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
- There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
- There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.
Temporary account IP viewer user right
- Administrators may grant the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right to non-administrators who meet the criteria for granting. Importantly, an editor must make an explicit request for the permission (e.g. at WP:PERM/TAIV)—administrators are not permitted to assign the right without a request.
- Administrators will automatically be able to see temporary account IP information once they have accepted the Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy via Special:Preferences or via the onboarding dialog which comes up after temporary accounts are deployed.
Impact for administrators
- It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects the autoblock option.
- It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
- Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. On Special:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should use Special:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).
Rules about IP information disclosure
- Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access is generally not allowed (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or ~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
- Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g.
~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward 3RR

Useful tools for patrollers
- It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via the User Info card, available in Preferences → Appearance → Advanced options →
Enable the user info card
- This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
- Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
- Similarly, Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
- The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.
