Invitation to Local Wikimania Event in San Francisco this Friday

[edit]

Hi!

Wikimania is happening and hopefully you're enjoying the sessions. While it's fairly last minute, you're warmly invited to participate in the local Wikimania-themed meetup in the Wikimedia Foundation office this Friday (tomorrow!). You will have to register in advance, but we would love to see more people from the WikiSalon community participate! For more information and registration, please check out meta:Wikimania 2022/San Francisco Meetup.

The event will involve hacking, teaching, learning, and celebrating and we'll have snacks. We will have the opportunity to watch live sessions at Wikimania together in the afternoon. The rest of the day we'll have opportunity to participate in the hackathon, and we may have some on-demand workshops/learning sessions.

In case we run out of space, it's first-come-first-serve so let us know soon! Hope to see you there.

Decent sources

[edit]

Hi. Re your question in the AfD for Foot shape, there's useful information about how to choose good sources and avoid bad sources here. Generally, googling for the subject and picking the top three or four links is unlikely to get you decent sources. Cheers, SunloungerFrog (talk) 17:44, 23 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion discussion about Lip Service (2000 film)

[edit]

Hello Tropical Storm Angela, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.

While your contributions are appreciated, I wanted to let you know that I've started a discussion about whether an article that you created, Lip Service (2000 film), should be deleted, as I am not sure that it is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia in its current form. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Lip Service (2000 film).

Deletion discussions usually run for seven days and are not votes. Our guide about effectively contributing to such discussions is worth a read. The most common issue in these discussions is notability, but it's not the only aspect that may be discussed; read the nomination and any other comments carefully before you contribute to the discussion. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.

If you have any questions, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|SunloungerFrog}}. And don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ . Thanks!

Alberto 94

[edit]

Hi there, I removed the information you added to Alberto 94's article. Just because sources called it a hurricane, doesn't mean that they were correct. You saw the same thing happen with other tropical storms incorrectly called hurricanes. The official agency is the National Hurricane Center, and according to HURDAT, Alberto only peaked as a tropical storm. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 17:35, 3 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about the mixup and speculation Hurricanehink. I'll try being far more careful and investigate sources more closely whenever using them. Angela Kate Maureen Pears 17:45, 3 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That's the thing, you don't have to be so careful that you don't even want to add information. See the bold, revert, discuss cycle. For the meteorological history, it's an important thing to get right, but it's tricky to explain at times, between the different warning agencies, and how storms are assessed. When in doubt, here is a page that has all of the storms by year around the world. For some basins, it'll show multiple intensity/location estimates, due to various agencies, but the Atlantic is usually only one, from the NHC/HURDAT. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:41, 3 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

El Nino/La Nina

[edit]

I feel like it would be useful to remind you that El Nino/La Nina are a global event and have impacts outside the United States including on tropical cyclone activity worldwide. In particular, El Nino means more TC's impacting French Polynesia, while La Nina tends to mean more TC's impacting Australia.Jason Rees (talk) 11:14, 20 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Oh yes! I recently remembered that fact. When I began becoming fascinated with these phenomenal years ago I realized then they manipulate the weather all across the world. For example, most La Niñas cause flooding for Australia. I once knew El Niño effect for Europe, though I need being reminded because at this time I do not remember, similar for Asia and Africa too. I would, however, happen already knowing La Niñas make for more tropical cyclones in Australia. Angela Kate Maureen Pears 15:58, 20 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Obviously the impacts of each El Nino vary but generally speaking in Asia/Oceania you would be looking at the location of tropical cyclone occurrence changing from say Australia/Phillipines towards Guam/French Polynesia. I am not overly sure on the impacts of El Nino in Africa/Europe.Jason Rees (talk) 10:29, 21 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
