Question from Downtostars (19:27, 8 September 2025)

[edit]

Hello. I would like to learn to start editing articles. 1) I am told the easiest things to start with are adding links and spell-checking? 2) Is this something that I should do from a laptop instead of mobile? 3) Is it preferable to link to other Wikipedia articles or is it okay to link to solid outside sources? (I would use the types of vetted resources that I would use for something such as a college level academic paper.) 4) For spell checking, I am assuming that standard American English spelling is what is usually used if one is editing English-language articles? Or is it fine to leave things with the British-English spellings? (Example: color/colour, standardized/standarised, etc.) 5) Should I focus on articles where I am familiar with the content or can I just tackle the random things on my dash? --Downtostars (talk) 19:27, 8 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Downtostars,
Sorry for the late response. Here are my answers:
  1. Yes, that tends to be true.
  2. Not necessarily, though I may not be the best person to ask as I rarely edit from mobile.
  3. You can link to other articles if it's within the article text. You shouldn't link to external sites mid-article. Let me know if this doesn't make any sense.
  4. If you click the "edit" button, sometimes you can see a puzzle-piece icon and then a "Use X English" (e.g. "Use American English"). If so, use that variety of English. If not, maintain the variety of English that's being used. If no variety has been specified, it's preferable to use the variety of English that people where the subject is from use. For example, this is why articles about Apple are in American English. However, in talk pages, feel free to use whichever variety of English you wish :)
  5. That is up to you.
Happy editing! thetechie@enwiki (she/they | talk) 01:07, 23 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from TSXero (01:28, 15 September 2025)

[edit]

Hi Wikipedia mentor, I'm TSXero and I was assigned by Xero to help update the Xero (company) Wikipedia page to ensure it is up to date and factual. As I am a conflict of interest (COI) editor, I can only request edits on the Xero (company) page. I was wondering if you have any tips to finding reliable neutral sources as I have received this feedback from another editor when I tried to request an edit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Xero_(company)#Request_to_add_to_Funding_section

They stated the articles are promotional by nature but as a company listed on the ASX, Xero's articles all seem promotional. Would really appreciate any feedback or advice moving forward. Thanks --TSXero (talk) 01:28, 15 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @TSXero,
Sorry that I'm a little late to this, but it looks like your question has been answered on the edit request thread. Please let me know if you have any further questions. thetechie@enwiki (she/they | talk) 02:33, 28 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Editor without border (13:57, 26 September 2025)

[edit]

Hi TheTechie,

I hope this message finds you well :). Thank you in advance for being assigned as my mentor.

I have been working on updating the “Dry Eye Syndrome” page. The only difficulty I’ve encountered is moving the page to a new title (“Dry Eye Disease”). According to TFOS DEWS III, the term ‘dry eye syndrome’ is no longer considered accurate. Although it was formerly used, it is now avoided, as advances have established dry eye as a distinct disease entity.

When I try to move the page, the form cannot be submitted, and the following message appears: “The page could not be moved: a page of that name already exists, or the name you have chosen is not valid.”

I would be grateful if you could kindly provide instructions on how to resolve this.

Thank you very much for your help.

Best regards, Editor Without Border --Editor without border (talk) 13:57, 26 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Editor without border,
It's because the title you want (Dry eye disease) is currently a redirect to the current title (Dry eye syndrome). As thus, only certain editors with a privilege (which I don't have, only administrators or people with the "page mover" privilege do) can move the page over a redirect. Please make a request at the requested moves page.
Hope this makes sense and happy editing! thetechie@enwiki (she/they | talk) 02:32, 28 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi TheTechie, Thank you for taking the time to respond to me. It was helpful :). I fully understand now. Kind regards. Editor without border (talk) 07:47, 28 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Brian Jon Forsberg (01:26, 28 September 2025)

[edit]

I have one thing I want to do. I have inherited all the paperwork from a WWII Air Force Officer and wanted to create a page and upload all the paperwork from his pre enlistment all the way to after the war end. He was stationed in Italy and repaired all the planes, was an engineer. Great information and I heard I could scan and upload it complete. --Brian Jon Forsberg (talk) 01:26, 28 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Brian Jon Forsberg, Wikimedia Commons may be of help for that. thetechie@enwiki (she/they | talk) 02:29, 28 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
